The Tall Grass Prairie Preserve
.
After breakfast at Pioneer Woman’s Cafe in Pawhuska town,
And a Lodge visit where they film her show on ranch ground,
We headed down the dirt roads on the back way so fine,
To the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve trucking on down the line.

The Tall Grass Prairie Preserve
.
My daughter Kristi was driving that day on the back roads,
As she knew the roads well from her younger working load.
When she worked studying the Greater Prairie Chickens there,
On the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve traveling over it everywhere.
.
We saw a lot of white smoke on the Preserve on that still day,
And Kristi advised they had a controlled burn out that way,
Where they burn off some prairie grass with fire fighters there,
To improve the habitat for the wildlife with very much care.
.
It was a very still day with hardly any wind blowing at all,
Purposely selected this first day of September in the fall.
So the fire would not get loose and get out of their control,
And burn off the area making it look like a black dust bowl.
.
We headed on over to the Preserve visitor center out there.
And inside there were bones of prairie animals so very bare.
There was a nice Tall Grass Prairie sign on the way through,
And a “Change Of Seasons” buffalo sculpture there too.
.
Pam bought a ball cap in that visitor center for old wild Bill,
That was expensive as I usually get my hats at the Goodwill.
But I must admit, the Preserve hat is really kind of cool,
And I’ll have it on tomorrow as we head out on our schedule.
.
On the way back to Pawhaska, we took the buffalo loop,
To look at buffalo roaming the prairie with lots of that poop.
Buffalo are so fun to look at when you can get fairly close,
While in your car zooming in, almost touching their nose.
Special thanks to Carl for his zooming ability.
.
The prairie flowers in the tall grass were blooming so nice,
Keeping the prairie fairies busy spraying them with their spice,
So we can see their beauty as we pass right on by there,
Enjoying those colors sprinkled out on that prairie everywhere.
.
Pam and I had so much fun on this outing with Kristi to play,
With our Ben and Sarah with us as we all enjoyed our day.
I didn’t have to walk far at all as I saw lots of very great sights,
So the day was just perfect and for this old geezer just right.
.
On the way home we stopped at the Osage State Park,
To return a life jacket we accidentally took home after dark,
On that fun outing at the lake we had five weeks ago,
And we feel better now about ourselves, this I really know.
We returned a life jacket like Luke is wearing.
.
With the Pioneer Woman breakfast and the Tall Grass Prairie,
All in one day, this old man was tired needing rest, you see.
So I parked in my easy chair and stayed there writing a blog,
Resting the remainder of the day making it easy on the Hawg.
What a great day!
