William Furman (PoPo)

Our daughters’ PoPo was a fine man whom I have written a poem about. We all loved PoPo and this is a few lines about some of his traits as I remember them. Here’s the poem.

William Furman (PoPo)

.
Pam’s Dad was William Furman we called PoPo or Bill,
He was a Church Of Christ goer with a very strong will.
PoPo believed  I would not be able to get into heaven
Unless I went to Church Of Christ on Sunday at ten and seven
.
.
After many long detailed discussions on this sensitive area,
I finally convinced him he was wrong and I may see him there.
I was 35 and PoPo said I must go to church to make the slate,
I asked when he started and he said it was at age fifty eight?
.
.
We often ate Thanksgiving dinner at PoPo’s house in Borger.
The meal was always great but no jelly was ever on the order
When he got his jelly, he licked the spoon and stuck it back,
This kind of turned my stomach and made me a little sick.
.
.
One time PoPo came to visit us down in Houston town,
We couldn’t find him anywhere, so we hunted all around.
We located him soundly sleeping on the upstairs pot.
We couldn’t see how he slept there in that smell of rot.
.
PoPo could sing the old songs of gospel like no one else,
He had a voice like an angel that he nurtured all by himself.
He sang very loud in church and also very often at home.
He had a full rich sound with a fine appealing tenor tone
.
PoPo had a cabin in the mountains near Wolf Creek Pass,
We often visited him up there as his place had rustic class.
PoPo fished at a beautiful place called Big Meadow Lake,
He fished on the bank and a limit of trout he would often take.
.
PoPo had an old red Ford truck with a red shell camper,
His eyes weren’t good, but that old pickup truck he did pamper.
He ran the red truck into a deep ditch one night near his cabin.
MaMo said Bill with your eyes, I knew this would soon happen.
.
PoPo believed in home remedies and would not see the doc,
Sometimes I think he suffered because no pain pills he took.
He had home remedies which said take “Anti-Pain Oil”
As it would cure anything and save an expensive Doctor call.
.
PoPo was a great guy who would help you any way he could.
He never asked for any kind of help  and he just never would.
But if someone tried to cheat him, he would go after them hard,
And usually he would not stop until he had his due reward.
.
A better meat butcher than PoPo, I have rarely ever seen.
When he cut, it was hard to keep up as that meat he did sling.
I never had better cuts of meat those  that he did butcher,
That melt in your mouth beef we often had for supper.

Raleigh’s Anti- Pain Oil was PoPo’s cure all and pain reliever of choice. He was a bit old fashioned when it came to medicine.
