Stocking The Pond

Stocking The Pond

.

Outings with our grandchildren make us so happy you know,
As we get to be with them as they always continue to grow.
This poem recalls a special day in our lives with them,
When we caught fish and stocked our pond the fish swim in.

Stocking The Pond

One day when our Ben and Sarah were staying at our home.
We decided to stock our patio pond with perch that were full grown.
We thought about it some and decided to go fishing at the park.
So were grabbed our fishing rods and on a fishing trip did embark.

.

We headed out to the nice pond that was in The Sooner Park.
And set up on the bank just as happy as yellow breasted larks.
I got in my directors chair and just sat there thinking so still,
And said for let’s go for a dollar to see who has the most skill.

.

We made it a contest to see who caught the biggest and the first,
Sarah won both prizes with her first perch, which made me feel worse.
I tried hard after that but just couldn’t get that winning big perch.
Ben came in second, but I continued to fish for my big fish search.

.

I finally caught two perch that Sarah called “just little baby fish.”
I was just a little embarrassed, but I was a just little bit selfish,
And I said. “They’ll grow up in the patio pond, so let’s keep them.”
So into the water bucket they went, so in our pond they would swim.

.

We fished for a while longer, and in all caught six pond Blue Gill.
Pam had lots of fun watching Ben, Sarah, Kristi and Hawg Jaw Bill,
As we pulled in the perch stockers for our little patio pond.
On this day fishing, with Ben and Sarah we developed a special bond.

.

We carried the perch home to the patio in front of our den,
And cleaned out the leaves getting the pond ready to put the fish in.
Ben and Sarah poured the fish into the pond and they all did hide,
And we knew then that none of our perch had floated up and died.

Bill fed the perch some canned spam to eat the very next day,
And in two days they started floating to the top bloated all the way.
In all we lost four, so we quit feeding them to see what went on.
And after four months the last two are healthy and swim on.

It makes you wonder about the nutrition that’s in canned spam,
And I don’t think I’ll eat anymore no matter how hungry I am.
I should have let the perch hunt natural food as they do in the wild.
Because this is the way they stay healthy rather than with spam piles.

.

We had so much fun with Ben and Sarah with our project that day.
And they both check on the fish when they get over this way.
These experiences working together with our grandchildren,
Are the spice of our life that we always love to keep building.
