Single Man Blues

Single Man Blues

Being single living all by yourself sometimes makes you blue,
It can be very boring so we seek out some fun things to do.
If booze is involved, we sometimes can get into some trouble.
This poem reviews a time that my trouble could have been double.

Single Man Blues

Not too long after I bought my house in Arroyo Verde in Fritch,
On a very cool Saturday night, I just got me a great big old itch
To get in my Mustang Mach 1 Fastback and head on into town.
I had been at home by myself all day and I was feeling down.

My Mustang Mach 1 Fastback was a fun car for a single man for sure.

..

I cruised on in about 7 PM and stopped by the liquor store.
I bought a fifth of ten year old Jack Daniels Whiskey and no more.
I headed for Jeans Bar and Grill in Borger to play some pool.
After two hours, I was feeling good and winning like a real fool.

This is the good stuff unless you drink too much of it at one time.

There were people there that I knew that wanted to go to the River.
So we took the party on down there and the place began to quiver.
We danced, hollered, and screamed to country tunes all night.
Having a ball while we watched two guys in a knock out fight.

Yeah Richard, I took that guy playing pool there for $50 tonight. Let’s go to the River.

..

At midnight, I had lost my single man blues so I headed for home,
I went the back way through Electric City driving slow as a gnome.
I arrived at home and parked the Mustang in the drive way,
And got out of the car and headed towards the house to stay.

.

On the way, I dropped my house keys right there in the grass.
I got to my knees looking for my keys saying “well kiss my ass.”
I hunted for what seemed like hours and finally stopped to rest.
I must have dozed off right there in my yard, what a big mess.

.

I woke up at 6 AM in the morning feeling like I was freezing,
I was covered all over with frost from the cold night just sneezing.
My keys were lying under me on the green grass in plain sight.
I just couldn’t believe I couldn’t find them when I looked at night.

.

I looked around to see if any neighbors were watching me there,
But I just could not see any of them looking from anywhere.
My head was throbbing so hard it felt like a big bouncing ball.
I just wanted to go to bed and forget about the hangover and all.

I guess we all feel the same way after having a hard night.

I slept until 3 PM in the afternoon and then showered and shaved.
I then made a deal with my self to stick to just beer as I raved,
Never again will I drink that hard liquor when I go out on the town,
There were a few times that I slipped a little that brought a frown.

Not too long after this single time period in my distant past,
I met my future wife Pam and started to settle down at last.
I think my time on earth may have been very limited indeed,
If I hadn’t married her and settled down raising a family to feed.

Thanks Pam for helping me get my life under control.
