The Green Valley (Arroyo Verde)

The Green Valley (Arroyo Verde)

.

There was a time early in marriage when we lived the good life.
Everything was just perfect and we were all free of all strife.
This poem discusses our life in the green valley at home
In Fritch, a small town in Texas, where purple sage is grown.

The Green Valley (Arroyo Verde)

.

I married Pam in June 1973, and moved to Fritch to begin our trip.
We had a new three bedroom home that was fully equipped
With a two car garage and backyard that was enclosed by fence.
It was out in the country in Arroyo Verde so peaceful not tense.

.

Both our families lived nearby for help if we ever needed them.
I had very good pay as a young engineer for Phillips Petroleum.
We decided we wanted to start working on expanding our family.
So we began our fun journey and Pam and I soon had a baby.

.

Kristi Lynn was born just ten months after we were married.
We were proud parents of the beautiful baby girl Pam carried.
Our lives changed for the better but we worked much harder
Taking care of our new baby, molding her into our daughter.

.

Pam’s Dad was an ex-butcher who could cut up that meat
So we bought a whole beef and butchered it real neat
In our garage at Fritch, and wrapped it in meat paper.
We froze the beef in our big freezer to eat it all later.

.

The beef was so very tender and melt in your mouth good,
With fresh sweet corn, and fried potatoes, such fine food.
I had my own garden and grew vegetables of all kinds.
So we had lots of fresh choices and our meals were all fine.

.

Lake Meredith was only five miles from our front yard
So in the evenings I often went fishing after I worked hard.
My Dad had a bass boat with a fish finder and the like,
And we always caught a string of big Wall Eyed Pike.

.

When I fished, Pam took Kristi and spent time with her Mother,
This was good for both of us and we all loved each other.
We always had the best baby sitter in the whole wide world,
If we went out, Pam’s Mom would always keep our little girl.

.

In the winter, my brother Craig and I hunted Lake Meredith ducks.
We got up real early and headed for the lake in my old truck,
It was usually very cold and uncomfortable out in the blind,
But we always were able to shoot many ducks of all kinds.

.

Pam dragged me to square dance lessons with me resisting.
But it turned out I loved it a lot and she had me enlisting
In the Boots and Calico Club for the weekly square dance.
This started me dancing and over a lifetime our lives did enhance.

.

Soon our lives were divinely blessed again by a new baby girl,
Tamara Ann was born in 1977, raring to give her new life a whirl.
She was such a good baby sleeping all night in her own bed.
Our family was now complete and more parenting was ahead.

.

We continued to live the good life In Arroyo Verde until 1978,
When I was promoted and moving far away was our fate.
I’ve often wondered what would have happened if we stayed,
But then I remember all the very good friends that we made.
