The Football Game

The Football Game

Sometimes pursuing good ideas turns out great and sometimes it  turns into a nightmare. This story is about a seemingly good idea that turned into a nightmare.

In October of 1966, my cousin Rick and I decided to make the plunge and go to Dallas and see a Dallas Cowboys Football game. The Cowboys were playing the St Louis Rams that weekend. We headed on down to Dallas and stayed in a motel on Saturday night. We had paid $35 a piece for two tickets so we were hoping they might be pretty good. We got to the stadium about three hours early found a parking spot and headed for the stadium. We found our seats and they were fairly low down in one of the end zones. We looked at each other and said well we’ve only got 2 hours to kill in these fine end zone seats.

Are you sure there’s someone on the field?

The game finally got underway and it turned out to be one of those low scoring defensive type games. It didn’t make much difference because we couldn’t see much anyway. I think they got down close to us only twice during the whole game. The game ended in a 10 to 10 tie. So we drove 300 miles to see a game that we couldn’t see and nobody won. We were both feeling kind of blue because we had to drive 300 more miles to get home.

Dandy Don Meredith was the quarterback that day, but we couldn’t see  much of him

When we got to the car, we heard on the radio that a cold front had rolled in and it was expected to be very foggy the rest of the evening. About the time we got to the Dallas City limits the fog rolled in so thick that you could not see 10 feet ahead of you. So we were rolling at about 20 miles an hour. We kept thinking we would drive out of it but it just kept getting thicker. So we crawled along all night. I finally got home about 5 AM Monday morning, so I just took a shower, changed clothes, and went straight to work. I have had worse days at work, but I can’t remember when.

This is what it looked like all the way home that October night.

I decided right then and there that I would never ever go to a live football game again because I could sit in my easy chair at home and have the best seat in the house in my comfy clothes while sipping on a cool one and it didn’t cost me a dime. We both thought the experience would be one of those good memories that would stick with you forever. Instead it turned out to be one of those bad memories that still irritates me some.

The Cowboys ended up with a won 10 lost 4 tied 1 record  that year and I got to see every game but the one we drove down and sat in the stadium to see on that October Sunday.

Thanks for reading The Football Game,
