The Date

The Date

Sometimes good woman hunting can be very trying. This is one experience I had in pursuit of a soul mate to spend my life with.

The Date

In 1967, I was 23 and single and living in an apartment in Borger, Texas. I had a date with a girl named Brenda to the New Year’s Eve dance at the Aluminum Dome. Brenda was blonde with blue eyes and a shapely body. I picked her up at her house in my brand new red 1967 Mercury Cyclone. The dance was BYOB so I had brought a bottle of old charter bourbon. The weather was cold and they were expecting snow that night.

This is not Brenda, but she looked a lot like this young lady. I could find no pictures of Brenda.

.
We had a good time dancing at the Dome with our friends, but the acoustics were terrible in the Dome and it was hard to keep beat with the music because of all the echoing in there. Rocky was at the dance with a girl named Celia that lived across the street from our apartments. So we all hung together at the dance.

Brenda and I brought the New Year in with some hot kisses and headed out the door. When we got outside, we could see that it had snowed about 4 inches and it had rained freezing rain on top of the snow so it was slicker than snot walking to the car.

I had had a drink or two and the mercury was very light and a bit over powered making it a terrible snow and ice car. On the way home home, I was driving and the car just started spinning in the road. I wasn’t going fast so it was like riding a roller coaster in slow motion. We went around twice and ended up lightly bumping a pole beside the road. The light tap broke the fiber glass piece around the left headlight.

We made it to her house driving even slower, smooched a little and I took her to the door. Her Mom was up waiting up for her.

The next Monday, I took my car in for repairs. It cost me $60 to get the headlight piece replaced and painted. I always seemed to have the worst luck on my dates in those days. I decided this might be an omen and Brenda wasn’t the one for me and we never dated again.

Thanks for reading The Date,
