Family Chicken History

Family Chicken History

.

Sometimes I pick some unusual subjects about which to write,
But we have had a lot of chickens back in our history so bright,
The poem digs very deep and goes back about 71 years or so.
If you’re not a chicken person, you may want to skip this show.

Family Chicken History

.

When I hear “Chicken in the bread pan just a kickin’ out dough,
It takes me way back to when we used to promenade and do-si-do.
But hold on a second our chicken history goes back before that,
The chicken was with me at the time I still had all my baby fat.

.

We were on a farm in central Oklahoma before I can even recall
Visiting with the Butchers in the boonies on down in the fall.
I sat and watched that old hen pecking that food off the ground
Wondering why that hen was making that funny clucking sound.

When I was very young I met my first chicken out on the farm. We may have had that one for supper.

.

.

When I was about 11 years old, I got a light blue Easter chick,
I was laying down on the ground in the green clover so thick,
And he crawled on my face and then pecked me right in the eye,
It hurt bad and scratched my eye so I gave him away as I did cry.

.

When my older sister JerrylDine’s family lived on Stark Street,
She raised chickens out back of her house in a coop made by Pete.
She loved taking care of those chickens that were oh so cute,
And they provided eggs for the family which saved them some loot.

..

..

They later moved out to the country near the town of Bartlesville.
It was the perfect country place for animals of all kinds, a big thrill.
She had a new batch of chickens that she raised out there too,
With help from the children who were older and a good little crew.

My daughter Kristi looking at the chickens at my sister JerrylDine’s country home near Bartlesville. She’s thinking that she will raise some chickens someday. That’s her cousin Deborah out there with her. Deborah and her family now live in that country home.

.

My daughter Kristi got that raising chickens gleam in her eye,
And got her a batch to raise in Broken Arrow in her backyard.
She could only raise hens as those cocky old roosters did crow
Disturbing the neighbors waking them up with the crows, you know.

Some of the unusual chickens raised by Kristi and Family.

She had to trade about half of them for hens when they did crow,
So it was a guessing game from the start as their nuts don’t show.
Their dog Scout had a couple of the chickens for supper one day,
Until he figured out they were pets too and were there to stay.

Now they all live together in perfect harmony in that back yard,
Competing for food with Scout without having to be on guard.
It’s amazing to see a bird dog out there in the yard with his prey.
Living together in peace as if it were as natural as can be that way.

..

When Ben and Sarah go our in their backyard for a little play,
Those chickens follow them around like little puppies astray,
I guess they think they may have some food or something to eat.
But it’s still fun to watch those chickens trailing at their feet.

.

As you can see, we have had quite a long family chicken history.
It seems that selecting this as a blog subject may be silly of me,
But I think any subject enjoyed by so many of my special family.
Will be a great subject to tell you a little part of my own history.
