What Makes Pappy Happy

What Made Pappy Happy

.
Old Dad had many entertaining activities that he just loved to do.
This poem will briefly describe some of the the details of a few.
I came to love some of the fun things that he loved to do too.
So I guess he had some influence on me as with him I grew.

What Made Pappy Happy

.

First and foremost my old Pappy loved to catch those big fish.
Catching a bigger fish than me was his goal and his first wish.
Fly fishing, casting, or just trolling, it made no difference at all.
Just so he was out on that lake, river, or stream having a ball.

Old Pappy caught some real whoppers when he had a little competition. He was in Hawg Heaven here.

.
Old Dad was a history buff that liked to read those history books.
His memory very was keen and he retained the data after a look.
He loved to play history trivia as he was usually the very best.
He also loved that TV game “Jeopardy” as for him it was a test.

Dad watched this show every day it was on line. He would put most of the players on the screen to shame.

.
Old Pappy studied the card game Bridge as it was very challenging.
He read the rules and experts advice until he was a real bridge king.
But he needed a win to make Pappy happy as he hated to lose.
When he would lose the bridge game, it gave him the blues.

If Dad would have gotten a bridge hand like this, he would have had the big one. Looks like a 7 no trump lay down.

One thing that made Pappy Happy was watching the TV show “Dallas.”
He never missed a single episode as he loved J.R.’s malice.
He knew the Ewing’s by first name and they seemed like his friends.
It nearly broke his heart when the TV series came to an end.

I didn’t watch “Dallas” when it was shown on TV the first time around, but I ended up getting hooked on it in later life watching every episode of every season on the box set DVDs.

During the summers Dad loved his vacations to Sulphur Springs,
He loved his Mom cooking, fresh fish, fried potatoes, and greens,
Nearly every day we fished somewhere in the land of the lakes.
Pappy was very happy as he thought his vacation was great.

This is a photo of my Dad as a boy in Sulphur Springs, Arkansas. He loved going back there to visit as that was his stomping grounds as a boy..

Dad loved to get a new car to drive his family in, without warning.
About every two years he would disappear on Saturday morning,
He would come home and get my Mom and head back out.
Soon they would drive up in a shiny new car as we did shout.

imageOne Saturday morning, Dad bought this black 1955 Ford Hardtop with pipes that rumbled home. I just loved that car.

Dad found this little dog that he named Ralph from his bark sound,
Over the years he loved that little ugly dog that he had found,
With a love so very strong that I was just never able to believe.
I know when that little dog died that he must have really grieved.

Pappy loved to watch the Dallas Cowboys play with me at his side.
The Dooms Day Defense made the opponents offense hide.
We both yelled as Staubach passed the ball to “Bullet” Bob Hayes
For another touchdown back in those super bowl winning days.

That’s the Dallas Cowboy Dooms Day Defense above and Bullet Bob Hayes below that Pappy and I watched together back in the good old days,.

Dad loved to take a little nip of the Kentucky whiskey now and then,
Mom didn’t approve so he did it on the sly every now and again.
He never ever was soused that I know of, but he sipped a bit.
When he could take a quick little shot where she couldn’t see it.

The Whiskey decanter I would fill up when Pappy came to visit us. When he left after a weeks stay, there would be a single shot left in the bottom. He always left just a little for the next guy.

Old Dad bought a cabin in South Fork near the Wolf Creek Pass.
He loved to spend his vacations there because the place had class.
We joined him there for our vacations which made him happy,
We loved our two weeks there roughing it with dear old Pappy.
