The Cook

The Cook

.

When our girls were in high school and college learning,
I cooked fine meals for the family as they waited yearning.
I enjoyed cooking and they  liked the dishes I did prepare.
So I will tell you about them in this story poem, if you care.

Often times as I cooked up a great meal for all of our fine family,
My girls would come on into the kitchen to keep me company.
We usually talked about the meal I was preparing for a while,
And then they would give me a big hug always making me smile.

One of my very favorite meals that I learned directly from Mother,
Was iron skillet chuck roast with fresh mushrooms to smother,
I filled the iron skillet with onions, carrots, and chunk potatoes,
And the dish looked like it came out of Southern Living on the go.

Occasionally I whipped out a dessert for the girls to eat then,
My favorite was chocolate cake with double fudge icing not thin,
I rarely got a picture image of the whole cake after in was done,
As we cut it right then and quickly ate it on down until all gone.

We often hosted traditional holiday meals when we stayed home,
Not traveling out town down to grandmas at Texas on the roam.
I usually cooked the ham, the green beans with new potatoes,
And the rolls while Pam did the rest there in the kitchen on the go.

Your Dad does a good job on these rolls, Kristi.

I often cooked Kansas City strip steaks over charcoal out back,
On a home made stainless steel grill to perfection on that rack.
The steaks looked so very mouth watering good off that grill,
With a melt in your mouth juicy taste that just gave you a thrill.

Cooking hams was my speciality back during those old times,
And we cooked at least one ham per month tasting so very fine,
Pam fixed crispy fried potatoes in another old iron skillet so black,
We froze left over ham to go in our brown beans as our fat back.

.

I let those brown beans soak over night to reduce cooking time,
Then added ham chunks, onions, jalapeños, and salt right in line.
If you get right proportions of each ingredient as the beans cook,
They have a taste that just kind of fills you up with joyous looks.

I also make a vegetable beef stew that also has such a good taste,
I pressure cook it making beef stew meat tender with no waste,
My girls loved that stew that I sometimes made on cold Sundays,
There were never any leftovers from beef stew day out our way.
