The Air Section Desk
.
The Air Section on Artillery Hill had a front desk there,
Sometimes we had to work the desk sitting with care,
To greet any dignitaries that did fly in from the air.
Here’s my experiences working the desk in that lair.
The Air Section desk was right through that door just inside by that wall.

The Air Section Desk
.
On Artillery HilI, I was working the desk at the Air Section,
When General Westmoreland came in looking my direction,
He asked if I was happy how things were going on Artillery Hill,
I said “yes sir, things are going very good for me still.”
I wonder if we will ever win this war?
.
He said “I’m glad to hear that son as we want our men happy,”
Soon officers from Artillery Hill showed up looking snappy,
And ushered him away with their noses in very deep,
I’m sure they gave him a dog and pony show like sheep.
Looks like they would have had someone down here to meet him.
.
The truth is earlier in the day the lifers were going totally berserk.
They had us on police call in the middle of a war zone for work,
Cleaning up just because the Commander of Vietnam was coming.
It had really chapped my ass and made my mouth start running.
Now this this is stupid, we’re not running a country club over here.
.
I was working the Air Section Desk kind of bored one day,
So I picked up the Stars and Stripes newspaper feeling a bit gray.
Ron Ely’s picture was on the front page looking nice and sleek,
With head lines “TV’s Tarzan was visiting troops here this week.”
I read read this paper everyday, cover to cover.
.
So I drew long eye lashes on him and added a comment,
“Come and see me big boy,” making him seem like a gay gent.
That afternoon Ron Ely arrived there and saw the picture,
Picking it up saying, “Well somebody likes me, that’s for sure.”
He actually looked looked pretty good with long eye lashes.
.
I just kind of looked up acting so innocent as he stared,
Then someone yelled out, “I bet the ‘Rag’ drew that there,”
And I was off the hook because ‘Rag’ was not around anywhere,
Ron was a very large man and I was actually a little scared.
The ‘Rag’ of course denied the accusation of being the artist.
.
But I was feeling kind of small at the time just about then,
As I look at him now, he doesn’t look like a real big man.
Now If I draw stupid things on pictures of people for fun,
I don’t leave them laying around to be read by just anyone.
Thank you Ron for taking your time to visit the troops in Vietnam in 1970.
.
I was sitting at that desk on one afternoon on my backside,
When one of our new pilots set down on the pad outside,
He came in yelling loud with his leg bleeding badly,
Saying get me up to the Hill Medical Center in a hurry.
Where did all of this blood come from?
.
I got the truck and he laid in the back as away I sped,
I got there in record time as he laid in back and bled.
He went inside and I never saw him on the Hill again,
As they sent him home with his wound right after then.
My trusty old truck I drove the wheels off of.
.
He had been shot in the leg by a VC hiding out in the trees,
As he flew over not expecting any trouble, if you please.
Scaring him bad as he thought he would bleed out,
Before he could get back to the Hill to get some help.
