The Ability To Learn

 

I worried about having the abilities to do my engineering job
After I graduated and had to perform or perhaps fail as a slob.
I figured out the companies train you to perform the work there.
It’s the ability to learn the job and work hard about which they care.

 

 

 

The Ability To Learn

 

When you go to school to get that special engineering degree,
You usually don’t learn what you need to do your job you see,
The company that hires you is not interested in what you earn,
They are investing in you because of your special ability to learn.

 

 

By studying hard and working to get your degree at your school.
You demonstrated the ability to learn difficult subjects very well.
The hiring company will teach you everything you need to know,
To perform the job they need you to do to allow you to grow.

 

 

I got a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Phillips hired me
To be a Process Engineer for the Natural Gas Processing Industry.
I started from scratch and learned the business from the ground,
And became a very productive asset for the company I found.

 

 

I learned what causes gas hydrates and how to prevent them.
I knew the processes for removing impurities from the gas stream
Like Carbon Dioxide, Mercury, Nitrogen, and Hydrogen Sulfide.
We treated the gas to meet specs for which the products abide.

 

 

We extracted Natural Gasoline Liquids and Helium from gas
To produce dry natural gas suitable to burn in your home at last.
We separated the NGL into ethanes, propanes, butanes and more,
To maximize profits from sales of the liquid products we stored.

 

 

Finally we treated and then liquefied the entire gas stream to sell
As Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to market remote gas as well.
One big LNG plant cost in the neighborhood of a billion dollars.
The engineering required for this effort lasted years to follow.

 

The ConocoPhillips LNG Plant in Darwin Australia that I spent the last two years of my career working on. It started up after I retired.

 

 

 

All the skills I needed to do my job well from Phillips I learned
After I graduated college by hard work and studying as I earned.
So don’t think you will have the skills you need when you graduate.
Just apply yourself to learning and work hard and you will do just great.
