How Did We Survive

How Did We Survive

.

Comparing 2017 with 1949, I wonder “how did we survive”‘
With emphasis on “now” and on “then” in my long life.
This short poem reviews today’s world and 1949 too,
Discussing this important issue from my point of view.

How Did We Survive

.

Today we eat fast food for nearly all of our daily nutrition,
Cholesterol blocks our arteries, heart bypasses come to fruition.
Then we had home made meals and exercise in our daily lives,
Today,
it’s a wonder that any of us are able to survive.

.

.

Today, we use artificial sweeteners for nearly all our sugar,
Some say these sweeteners are cancer causing boogers,
We used to use nothing but real sugar and did not strive.
So today we may be lucky if we are able to survive.

.

.

Today children must have car seats buckled in the back seat,
It’s the law to keep them alive as they ride on the unsafe streets.
We used to ride the nation unbuckled in the front until we arrived.
It kind of makes you wonder about how we all survived.

.

.

Today, teachers can’t lay a hand on children in our schools,
For fear of being fired or of being sued and looking like fools.
Then our teachers used large wooden paddles from trees derived,
To keep us in line and somehow we were able to survive.

.

.

Today, parents can’t use switches or belts to punish their kids
Without fear of charges of child abuse being filed by the Feds.
Our parents used both to keep us right and we weren’t deprived.
Just a few little stings to keep us in line and we all survived.

.

.

Today our cars have air conditioners, CD players. and even TVs.
Traveling is a pleasure rather than a burden, it’s easy to see.
Then we put down windows and  had only radios of small size.
We sweated and had a lot of car noise, how did we ever survive.

.

.

Today, everyone has a smart phone they carry In their hand,
To call, message, play games, and watch TV which is grand.
Then we had things to carry like the YoYo and pocket knives
To entertain us, how in the world did we ever survive.

.

.

Today there are large flat screen TVs in HD and even in 3D
With all the latest series, movies, and sports for us to see.
Then we had radio shows like the “Shadow Knows” Sunday at five.
Makes it very hard to believe, on radio alone we could survive.

.

.

Today, we stream music, movies, sports, to our homes on Wi Fi,
This technology is truly amazing and entertains us, that’s no lie.
Then we had radio, 45s and LP’s, and drive in movies in our lives,
With those obsolete technologies, how did we ever survive.

.

.

I can’t image what advances in technology the future might bring.
The data streaming around out there may become a data string.
Could this penetrate our bodies and start a new data virus
That ends all and starts a virtual world with data versions of us?

Yes, I think this man is all “Data” for sure.
