Station SLOB

Station SLOB

Having fun at home with your entire family is one of the best ways to build sound family relationships and memories that are dear to your heart. Here’s one activity we all had a ball doing at home

Station SLOB

In 1982 when we lived in the piney woods of North Houston, Texas, my daughters Kristi and Tamara were 8 years old and 5 years old. I had a reel to reel tape recorder system and some microphones with my stereo system. One of our favorite things to do as a family was to do a family radio show of Radio Station SLOB. I was the station announcer and each guest on the show would be asked to perform an act on the show. We would then have a brief commercial break. Once when my Mom and Dad and my Aunt Bueldine and Uncle Harold came to visit us, we recorded one of those Station SLOB shows that went something like this.

Bill ” Hello this is Station SLOB and we are on the air. Today we have some very special guests with us, so let’s get started. Tamara will be our first guest and she will tell us us a joke. ”

Tamara In her sweet little voice “What did the bubble gum say to the shoe? (After a short pause) I’m stuck on you!”

Bill “Thank you, Tamara that was an excellent joke let’s give her a big hand. (clapping) Now it’s time for a commercial message. Does your liver quiver, does your heart fart, if so take Carters little liver pills! Our next guest will be Pam and she will sing us a song.”

Pam. “I will sing ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night'” She started singing the song about 5 times but couldn’t remember the words and said “I give up.”

Bill “Well let’s give Pam a hand for trying anyway. ( weak clapping) It’s time for another commercial message. Pepsi Cola hits the spot, ten minutes later on the pot. Our next guest will be Kristi, she is a cheer leader for her school and she will do one of her cheers for us.”

Kristi. ( With much enthusiasm ) ” Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar, all for the Rattlers stand up and holler. Yeaaaaaah”

Bill “All right let’s give that girl a big hand. (Loud clapping) it’s time for another message from our sponsor. Northern Tissue, Northern Tissue is a very good buy, Northern Tissue, Northern Tissue, wipes your bottom dry. Next on the show will be my Dad, so let’s give him a big welcome. ”

Dad. He reached out and cleaned off a spot on the coffee table and started rapping his knuckles while he sang. ” Peckerwood soup, peckerwood soup, peckerwood soup and jaybird gravy.”

Bill “Thanks Pappy that was pretty good (weak clapping) stay tuned to Station SLOB for more exciting acts, but now here’s a message from one of our sponsors. ( in the voice of Mae West) Smoke White Owl cigars, and why don’t you come up and see me sometime, big boy. Our next guest will be Bueldine and she will tell us a story.

Bueldine. She rattled off a story about ‘Little Blue Blue’ that kept the kids mesmerized. It’s fairly long and a great story so I’ll save it for a future blog.

Bill. ” Wow that was really terrific Bueldine (loud clapping) Now it’s time for a word from our sponsor. From the valley of the Jolly, Ho Ho,Ho, Green Giant. Next, Harold will tell us about their trip to Houston.

Harold. He told a long narrative about the trip and ended with “……..and if we don’t quit eating so much, I won’t be able to get behind the steering wheel to drive home.”

Bill “Give that man a big round of applause (weak clapping). Next we will have a duet by Bueldine and Mom.”

Bueldine and Mom. They sang the finest version of ‘A Tisket A Tasket’ that I have ever heard.

We did some more acts and ended up with a group humalong to ‘You Are My Sunshine.’

I kept those tapes for many years but they got lost in one of our moves. These kind of family activities with recordings are the kind you will cherish when you get to be older. I listened to the tapes so many times that I pretty well had them memorized. Be careful with the tapes however, because they are much more valuable than you may think!
