Southern Rock

Let’s face it, any music from the Southern States is going to be good. Southern Rock falls just behind classic country on my favorite music list. Here’s a little about my Favorite Southern Rock Music.

Southern Rock

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, I was in the last years of my single man life and I became a very strong fan of Southern Rock music. My favorite group by far was Creedence Clearwater Revival. The lead singer was John Fogerty who I thought was about ten years ahead of his time with the great songs they sang. Some of their songs were “Bad Moon Rising”, “Looking Out My Backdoor”, “Up Around The Bend”, “Down On The Corner”, “Run Through The Jungle”, “Born On The Bayou”, “Proud Mary”, “Traveling Band”, and “Commotion”. Virtually everything they released was very good and I listened to their music every chance I got.

CCR’s music was so unique that I thought many other singing group’s music in this era were definitely influenced by their style. For instance the English Band, The Rolling Stones, released a couple of songs in the early 1970s that I thought had strong Southern Rock influences. One song was “Brown Sugar”, and the other was “Honky Tonk Women”. I noticed that other bands seemed to be influenced producing new songs in the Southern Rock Style that ended up being hits. One song was “Mony Mony” by Tommy James and The Shondels, another was “Joy To The World” by “Three Dog Night”, another was “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf, and one more was “Amie” by Pure Prarie League. I loved each one of these songs and included them on my Southern Rock Playlist on Spotify.

In the mid 1980s, there was another wave of Southern Rock from bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Georgia Satellites, and Charlie Daniels Band, with songs like “Sweet Home Alabama”,
“Keep You Hands To Yourself”, and “The South’s Gonna Rise Again”. I love this music also.

Gary and I wrote the “Fred Shuffle Dance” to “Keep Your Hands To Yourself” and later, the Rhythm Aces men also did a clog show routine to the same song in competition. Some of the Southern Rock influences stuck with me over the years and I still love the music.

That’s Fred on the left, then Ellis, then Gary, then Bill doing a clogging show routine to a Southern Rock tune at Silver Dollar City near Branson. The girls kept telling Fred and I to “Keep Your Hands To Yourself” during the whole show. Gary and Ellis heist those skirts real nice, don’t they? The skinhead in the foreground looks like he’s enjoying the nice legs. Like the Goodwill Store costumes?

Treat yourself to a little Southern Rock today and pep up your life a little!
