South Fork Summer 2001

South Fork Summer 2001

.

In the summer of 2001, we leased a nice big cabin,
With Craig and Rhona and their family to live therein,
While we enjoyed a South Fork vacation once again.
In the mountains with all the fun things to do for a win.

The cabin we leased was on the South Fork of the Rio Grande,
Up Wolf Creek Pass a ways, was where it did stand.
The north side porch, overlooked the river below,
Sitting out there you could hear the rivers loud flow.

Pam, Tamara, and I arrived at the cabin before Craig’s bunch,
We decided to hike up to a lake on a path after lunch.
I seem to recall it was called Crystal Lake on the sign,
The scenery on the way up was of God’s own design.

I carried my travel fly rod in a small little case up there,
To that pristine small lake out in the middle of nowhere.
There were some ducks swimming out there on the lake,
As I sat and assembled my fly rod for trout to take.

When my rod was together, I started flipping my dry fly,
I got several rises short of my fly as it floated so dry,
Until a trout sucked it in and I stuck my hook in his lip,
He wasn’t too big so I landed him quickly on that trip.

I posed for a picture with that small little Brook trout,
As I was proud of that little fish as I was out and about.
Even with that small fish, I was feeling a natural high,
Up at that pristine mountain lake under a clear blue sky.

Tamara took all the pictures on our walk that day,
She looked pretty good wearing my waders on the way.
And she enjoyed the walk and and the fly fishing show.
As she loved being in the outdoors, this I do know.

I think Rhonda and Craig’s family enjoyed their time,
In that rustic old cabin up in the mountains so fine,
Rhona and Gina must have avoided the camera there,
As there was not one picture of them around anywhere.

There is Craig, Chris, Paulette, Lauran, Spencer, Chandler, Ashley, and Elizabeth.

When the girls and the kids went out shopping in Creede,
Craig and I loaded the trout fly fishing gear we did need,
And headed out to the riffle below the bridge to Alpine,
To fish for those big brown trout we knew we could find.

The Master at work.

Craig got out there in the Rio Grande river so fast,
Laying that mosquito dry fly upstream with a cast,
Then letting in float down until a trout sucked it in,
Then he would put him away and flip it upstream again.

I recall we caught a limit of trout on that fine day,
And I think Craig took the kids down on a raft all the way.
I had just one picture left of the batch that I found,
That I will add right here as I close this blog on down.

I believe this is Paulette.
