Our Japanese Maple

Our Japanese Maple

.

There’s a Japanese Maple tree in our courtyard here,
That has meant a lot to Pam and I over the long years.
In this story poem, I’ll tell you why that’s such a good tree.
And then perhaps you too may well also agree with me.

In the spring time when the leaves come on the tree,
They are a beautiful light red for a month or so, you see.
Sprucing up the front yard and brightening our day,
Making springtime so very special for us that way.

.

In the fall that Japanese Maple turns bright red then,
The front yard looks really nice for two months again.
Contrasting the bright green of the other trees here,
Giving the front of our home a very special fall cheer.

.

One spring morning we found some cute baby robins,
Nesting in the branches with the chicks heads a bobbin’.
The birds soon matured with a bright orange breast,
And then flew off and left that cute little robin nest.

In the summertime that Japanese Maple gives nice shade,
When Kristi plants courtyard flowers with our Sarah’s aid.
There is a beautiful umbrella of light green just above,
And the tree provides a safe haven for passing mourning dove.

.

When the hoards of wood bees start flying in early summer.
I get out on the courtyard and swat those big hummers.
I use those Japanese Maple leaves for a wood bee blind,
Hiding under there swatting trying to kill all their kind.

Ben and Sarah started climbing that Japanese Maple,
Many years ago when they were just barely able.
I messed with them both a lot out there having fun.
Just playing as they climbed our tree in the morning sun.

.

Ben climbs that old tree several times each year,
When the grandkids spend a little time over here.
Over the years, Ben has gotten a lot bigger right along,
But the tree has grown too and it’s still plenty strong.

.

Ben and I both play with our guns out under the tree,
Providing us much joy as we are both fun lovers so free.
We have fought many battles out under those branches,
Pretending we were out there on our big Texas ranches.

.

Recently, Luke and Zack discovered that old tree,
And climbed to near the top acting line Tarzan so free,
Letting out a long load yell like old Tarzan used to do.
Having lots of fun in that Japanese Maple as they flew.

.

Hold on a second, who’s that old woman up the tree,
Wait that’s Pam up in there that my old eyes do see.
Those branches are creaking looking kind of obtuse,
You better get down from there before they turn loose.

.

That old Japanese Maple even looks good in the snow,
With patches of white glistening with a morning glow,
And a few dry leaves that haven’t dropped off yet.
All of you would just love a Japanese Maple, I’ll bet.
