My New Fly Rod

My New Fly Rod

A friend of mine named Rocky reminded me of a time,
Right after I had bought me a brand new fly rod so fine.
We went fishing together to try out my brand new rod,
For the very first time, as I felt so good and very proud.

My New Fly Rod

In the 1960s, I had won a carp fishing contest back then,
And I got $1000 worth of fishing tackle credit for the win.
With part of that loot, I got me a brand new fly rod and reel,

Which was worth $200 dollars and to me was a big deal.

I had told Rocky of the fun we had catching all those carp,
That were 5 to 10 pounds each and did fight so very hard.
Rocky told me he would like to try it sometime very soon
And I said “how about next Saturday a long about noon.”

“i remember fishing for carp at Lake Meredith when Bill used his brand new fly rod and a carp drug it in the lake. He never got it back.”

That weekend, we headed for Lake Meredith to catch carp.
I brought my fly rod along looking new and so sharp.
It was very limber making catching big fish even more fun.
We stopped by Tom’s 66 and picked up a big can of corn.

We went to a place not to far from the big Sanford Dam.
That we called Oil Well Canyon with deep water near land.
There was a pumping well there near to the deep water,
With a nice flat place to park for lake access like no other.

Rocky and I grabbed the gear and found a place to fish,
And slip sinker rigs with treble hooks, we both did fix.
The slip sinker allowed the line to slip right on through,
So the carp didn’t feel weight as the corn bait he did chew

In five minutes, we had a big carp hooked on our lines,
Rocky was yelling and laughing loud having a great time.
The carp were there and they were very hungry that day.
We caught four or five each having a ball as we did play.

A carp on the fly rod bent the pole double which made it very enjoyable.

Rocky got a big one on and I put my fly rod in a hole,
And walked to him to see if I could help as the fish rolled.
Rocky yelled loud “there goes your pole into the lake,”
And I saw my new fly rod actually flying, for Pete’s sake.

The carp were ugly and they smelled bad, but the fun derived from catching the big fish made it worthwhile.

The fly rod flew out and hit the water moving so very fast,
And Rocky heard me say loud “well just kiss my young ass”.
I stripped off some clothes and followed my fly rod in,
But there was not a sign of my new fly rod ever again.

I guess I had hooked old granddaddy carp on my hook,
Who had pulled my fly rod in on that fast trip he took.
Grinning as he looked back at me chasing my fly rod then.
Getting back at me for earlier catching all his old friends.

I had actually forgotten this story from old days gone away,
Until Rocky mentioned it in a post from just yesterday.
So this is dedicated to him for this old recovered memory,
That came back in a flash, thanks to my old friend Rock

.Rocky enjoyed that day fishing for carp. I’m sure these salmon were much more fun.
