Lake Marvin

Lake Marvin

Occasionally, my Dad planned a fishing trip with someone from his work. I loved to go with them because I got to see and hear a lot of stuff I would never have known about my Dad.

When I was 10 years old and we were still living on 3rd street in Phillips, we had a neighbor named Herb Counsler who had a wife and a 3 year old son. He was my Dad’s buddy from work and they cooked up a fishing trip for them and me to go large mouth bass fishing at lake Marvin which was north of Canadian, Texas, about 80 miles from our house.

Dad and Herb told lots of stories that day as they were out in that boat fishing. I tried to look like I wasn’t paying any attention as i carefully listened to every word.

We got up at 4 AM on Saturday morning and hit the road. I slept most of the way there. When we got to the lake which was about round and about a mile across, they made arrangements for us to use an old wooden row boat that was tied up at the dock. So we loaded our gear in the boat and rowed out to the middle of the lake and just started slowly drifting around out there while we all fished for bass with the Lazy Ike Lure.

We loaded up the row boat and paddled out to the center of the lake and began to drift.

We had fished for about an hour when my Dad got the first strike. I could tell it was a good sized fish as his pole was bent nearly double. When he got the fish in, it weighed in at 4 pounds and Dad put him on his stringer. We fished for another hour and Herb got a strike and hooked a good bass. When he got his fish in, it weighed in right at four pounds also and he put his on his stringer.
You guessed right, we fished for another hour and I got a strike and hooked a good bass. Mine weighed in right at four pounds and I put it on Dads stringer. Dad caught one more four pounder and we decided to call it a day. We had fished about four hours and had 16 pounds of large mouth bass. We filleted the fish and put them on ice and headed for home,

.The Lake was beautiful that day as we drifted around throwing those Lazy Ike Lures.

Those four big bass made the fishing trip a big success that day. As a 10 year old boy, I loved the fishing as well as all the stories I got to listen to that day..

In Canadian, we stopped at a bar and grill and ate some lunch while the older guys drank a few beers and I drank a coke or two. We made it home about 4 PM with lots of fish stories to tell out families and some delicious bass fillets. During those hours between fish at the lake and the time between beers at the bar, I heard many things I never knew about my Dad. Just another day out with the guys.
