Dirty Laundry

Dirty Laundry

.

When I left home and started going to college at Texas Tech, I had to learn to do things for myself that my Mom had always done for me before. Here’s my experience with one thing.

Dirty Laundry

.

After I had been down at Lubbock attending Texas Tech College for four weeks, I found that I had run out of clean clothes so I loaded up my dirty laundry in pillow cases and headed for the laundromat just off campus east of Jones Stadium. I stopped on the way there and picked up a big box Tide laundry detergent. This was my first time ever to do my own laundry but how hard could it be, I had seen my Mom do it a hundred times.

Well this should be easy, it’s all ready for me to wash my dirty laundry.

.

I arrived and picked 5 adjacent washing machines and divided my clothes between them evenly and put two cups of Tide detergent in each machine and loaded each one of them with quarters and started them. I was sitting on a bench waiting when the kid sitting next to me ask me if those machines with the soap suds running out the top and onto the floor were mine. I jumped up and ran and got a mop and rags and cleaned suds off of the machines and off of the floor in front of them during the entire wash cycle. The kid told me he saw that I was putting in too much soap, but he wasn’t sure what would happen so he didn’t say anything.

.

I got a big basket and started putting my clothes in them and I noticed that all my white clothes including jockey shorts, tee shirts, and socks had turned pink during the washing process. The kid told me that you have to separate the white things and wash them in a separate machine or that will happen every time. I threw away the pink tee shirts and socks and kept the pink jockey shorts since no one could see them anyway.

They did turn out a nice shade of pink. Anyone want  some pink tee shirts?

I loaded my wet clothes into two dryers and managed to get them dry without burning them up. I stopped by a clothing store and got me some new white socks and Tee shirts and headed back to Wells Hall on campus. I learned a lot that day about doing my own laundry, but my cousin Rick who was my roommate razzed me about those pink jockey shorts the rest of the semester.
