Boss Chicken

Boss Chicken

.

This is a true story about my daughter Kristi’s family pets,
As she raises pet chickens out in the back yard with no regrets.
This is a story all young children will love to have read to them,
As “Boss Chicken” weighs about 100 pounds not being too thin.

There once was a family so happy living there in Broken Arrow,
There was Carl, Kristi, Ben and Sarah always straight and narrow.
They decided that they wanted to raise all kinds of fine chickens,
But not the kind that you fry up that are so very finger lickin’ .

They wanted some pets to play with and provide eggs so fresh.
So they drew up some plans for a special coop for them to nest.
They all worked hard building that fine chicken house together,
Now they were ready to get chickens with all kinds of feathers.

They painted that house and rounded up those chickens to raise,
Ben and Sarah named all those chickens and each one did praise.
The hens loved them so and followed them around like pups,
It was fun to see the hens follow them when they picked eggs up.

When the family worked in the backyard, the hens were there too,
Eating the seeds as they worked In the big garden that they grew.
They looked just like a family of hill billies with chickens galore.
With cute straw hats on holding those pet chickens they adore.

The Family also had a pet Brittany Spaniel that they did love so,
He was the gentlest dog I have ever seen as the children did grow.
He’s like another member of the immediate family so very dear.
His name is Scout with a red nose and bird dog instincts so clear.

The first week Scout was out in the yard with those big old hens.
His instincts got the best of him and he attacked some of them.
One old hen went up to hen heaven and another was hurt some.
Kristi got in the middle of Scout, but with him she was not done.

She watched him close when he was outside in the back yard.
And made him lay in the back door watching them on guard.
Until he figured out they were her pets she loved just like him.
Then she let him roam freely  like he was the biggest old hen

Scout took his roll seriously watching keeping them from harm.
Sometimes he looked just like a sheep dog with all his charm,
Sitting there on top the hill just watching over his big old flock,
Looking for foxes and skunks that might try to eat his stock.

As more time passed by, he surely became the biggest chicken,
Hanging together with them when out there just food picking.
He learned their ways and hung in there eating family scraps,
Looking like a big Brittany Spaniel Hen scratching in the grass.

Old Scout is sort of like big “boss chicken” as he sleeps inside,
And hangs out in the house whenever he wants to rest his hide.
The hens often try to follow him right on in to see what’s in there,
But, they are shooed right back out by family members, I swear.
