The birth days of my daughters were pretty special, but things weren’t as straight forward as I had hoped they would be. Here’s the story.

Birthdays

It was four in the morning on April 12, 1974, when my wife Pam woke me saying she was having pains so I grabbed my clothes and drove eighty miles an hour all the way from Fritch to the North Plains Hospital in Borger, Texas. Doctor Knowles checked her over and told us she was just having gas pains, he gave her some gas relief medicine and we headed back home. On the way home she started passing that gas that was causing her the problem and we ended up driving all the way home with the windows down. I took a shower and headed for work when we got home. About 7 AM on April 19, 1974, Pam told me she was having pains again so we headed for the Hospital again. This time it was the real deal. I sat in the ready room with her for about 6 hours before she was ready for the delivery room. Kristi Lynn was born and she was the best looking baby girl I had ever seen. She was just perfect in every way. For the next year, our precious little baby girl never slept at night so one of us was up most of the night with her.

On March 10, 1977, Pam was pregnant with Tamara and she had been visiting her mother on Grand Street. She was heading down Grand Street with Kristi sitting in the front seat holding a meringue chocolate pie that her mother had sent home with her. A lady ran a stop sign on one of the side streets and plowed right into the side her car. The pie went every where and Kristi hit the dash and cut a big gash in her eye. Pam’s stomach hit the steering wheel. They went to the hospital and got Kristi stitches and Pam checked out. Everything seemed to be OK with Pam and the baby. Of course, the lady that plowed into her did not have insurance, so our insurance paid for the hospital bills and the car repairs. On March 22, 1977, Pam started having pains and again we headed for the hospital again. They called Doctor Knowles, but he didn’t make it to the hospital in time. Within 30 minutes she was in the delivery room. Nurse King who happened to be one of our neighbors in Arroyo Verde in Fritch delivered Tamara. Pam was really doped up and I could hear her screaming during the birth. When Tamara Ann was born, the nurse said “it’s a girl” and Pam yelled “A girl, I don’t want a girl, I wanted a boy, you can have that one.” When they brought Tamara in to us she was another beautiful baby and Pam changed her mind. She had a little bit of a flat spot on her head and her right foot was turned in slightly. The doctor surmised that the car wreck had caused Tamara to shift slightly out of place in the womb resulting in the conditions. The flat spot was gone in a few days and we worked with her foot until it was perfect also. About a week after we came home a bubble about the size of a half dollar came up from her belly button. The doctor said ignore it that it would go away, and it did. Tamara was the sweetest baby in the world and she slept soundly all night every single night.

Both of our girls grew up to be beautiful young ladies and fine mothers. We are so proud of both of them
