A Fish Out Of Water
I think that we have all felt like a fish out water at some point,
This poem gives a few of my experiences being out of joint,
A flopping around on land wishing I could be another place,
But, I usually toughed it out, displaying my own internal grace.

‘A fish out of water’ infers someone’s uncomfortable today.
I have felt like a fish out of water a time or two during my stay.
When I was in the Army in training, it was very hard on me.
As all the training was geared for 6th grade schooling, you see.

Wow, they are repeating everything six times to try to drive it into our brains. What a methodology.

I had a degree in engineering and the training bored me to death,
Teaching methods made me feel like I could not get my breath.
But I hung in there trying to keep it from being so very boring.
By thinking of things like a bald eagle on the wing just soaring.

In college, I took a course in Business Administration that was bad,
Sitting through a class stressing politics as a tool made me sad,
As I hated politics and preferred to deal in engineering facts,
I was a like fish out of the water just flip flopping on my back.

Are you kidding me, what was I thinking to sign up for this elective course.
.
.
When I was single after graduating college working for a living,
I had a group of engineers to welcome with a speech I was giving.
I worried and felt like I was a fish out of water giving that speech,
And almost got an ulcer, but my boss told me it was a real peach.
.
.
“Welcome to all you young enthusiastic engineers, may the force be with you in all your endeavors with Phillips”

The time I was in the church in a room with my brother Craig,
I was in deep fast water feeling like I was about to lose my legs.
Then they called me to come to the alter and soon I was married,
And I was happy as can be as across the threshold Pam I carried.

Here’s to a long and happy marriage.

That time Pam drug me to that first square dance it was pure hell.
They pulled me around like I was never meant to dance very well,
But soon this fish was swimming like a real pro in the square,
Do si doing and promenading like everyone else that was there.

Well Pam, I think I’ve got it now. Let’s go for the more difficult moves now..

As I was in that room with Pam and she kept saying stop the pain,
I was like a fish out of water that was just about to go insane,
Then they took her into the delivery room and Kristi did arrive,
She was happy and I was elated to see our new baby girl alive.

I cant believe you were causing your Mom so much pain yesterday, you beautiful girl you.

When I went into the deep jungle looking for an LNG plant site,
We were surrounded by natives with long knives ready to fight.
I felt like a fish out of water getting ready to be boiled for chewing,
Until they spoke Australian English asking us what we were doing.

Hello, what are you chaps doing here?.

When I was in Odessa and the work was so over powering,
And I had a painful ulcer deep in a my stomach that was flowering,
I felt like a fish out of water dealing with ugly personnel attacks.
Changing jobs back to engineering did put me back on track.

Recently, I had some difficult problems with a very low heart rate.
I was like a fish out of water gasping for air not feeling so great.
Then I had a pace maker installed and I have been feeling fine,
This is one piece of technology that I am thankful is now mine.

Help me doctor, I’m tired all the time and my heart rate is 35.
