Independence Day 2002

Independence Day 2002

.

Do you recall what you did on Independence Day 2002?
You would if you had taken pictures all the day through,
Of the activities for that fine day with friends and family,
That I will share with you in this story poem from me.

The cabin we leased right down on the Rio Grande River.

Independence Day 2002

.

In the summer of 2002, we leased a cabin near South Fork,
With Carl and Kristi and some of their friends of course.
Kristi’s OSU buddies that were close friends of hers,
Who brought their men along as their own chauffeurs.

OSU buddies Haley, Kristi, and Melissa

.

The cabin we leased was right on the Rio Grande,
With the river right in the back yard as we had planned.
As the group wanted me to give fly fishing lessons,
In maybe two or three interactive fly fishing sessions.

Carl, Cris, and Haley’s boyfriend. You can see the mighty Rio Grande River over Carl’s right shoulder.

.

Tamara joined us from Dallas and we had a great week.
We had family at South Fork, so a reunion we did seek.
We planned a big cook out on the cabin balcony so fine,
Over looking the river on Independence Day rain or shine.

Tamara and Kristi on the balcony.

.

Buffalo Bob, Brenda, Brad, Mary and Holly were there,
As well as Otho and Darlene from Pam’s family so dear.
Craig and Rhona and their family were up there too,
So we planned hamburgers and hot dogs for all the crew.

.

On the Fourth of July, the whole crew showed up for fun,
We had plenty of cold beer iced down to start our run.
We recruited Brad to grill the hamburgers and hot dogs,
As the rest of us drank beer and talked In the cabin of logs.

How are those burgers coming Brad?

.

Otho always brought squash to grill to a golden brown.
So he too did a little work while we sucked beer down.
As we moved around from outside to inside so fun,
To try to spend time with everyone there on the run.

That Squash smells so good Otho.

.

When the food was all cooked, we filled our plates,
Then we all sat down together and ate and ate and ate.
What a good Independence Day we had being together,
I loved that hat that Buffalo Bob wore like no other.

Time to eat on this fine Independence Day.

Nice hat you’ve got there Buffalo Bob.

We sat out there on the balcony for hours together,
Enjoying time reminiscing of old times with each other,
On that special Independence Day on that big balcony.
When mosquitos got thick, we moved inside as a family.

I found him Rhonda, he’s out here drinking a cool one.

.

That evening we played some old cassette tapes,
Of old station SLOB shows from very old past dates,
In honor our Moms & Dad that had recently passed away,
Shedding a few sad tears on that special reunion day.

Hey Dad, play that one with BuelDine and your Mom singing together again.

.

We talked about old times from way back in our lives,
Laughing out loud about things from when we did thrive.
I miss all those family reunions we had in South Fork,
When we leased those nice cabins that were like resorts.

.

Oh I almost forgot, there was one more in our group,
To fully complete the roster of our fine reunion troop.
I don’t remember his name from way back in those days,
But he was a very fine fellow that with us did stay.

PS: My fly fishing class went quite well that summer and all six students did very well. After class, they waded out in the Rio Grande and caught a mess of trout for us to eat.

Thanks for reading Independence Day 2002,
