Urban Cowboy

Urban Cowboy

.
Occasionally a movie comes along that has a big influence on us.
We liked what we saw and wanted to try the stuff, a real must.
This poem describes the big impact the movie “Urban Cowboy”
Had on our lives back in the early 1980’s as changes we deployed.

The “Urban Cowboy” starring John Travolta and Deborah Winger,
Was released on June 6, 1980, and it was really a humdinger.
It changed the look of honky tonks nationwide and caused a real craze.
Pam and I loved the show and wanted to try some things in a phase.

Come on, let’s dance to the “Devil Went Down To Georgia.”

.
We had been to honky tonks before, but never as the in thing to do,
We already loved the music and the line dancing was very cool too.
The movie was a career maker for many of the artists in the show,
Who had ever heard of Johnny Lee before “Looking For Love” you know.

Hello, I’m Johnny Lee and I’m “Picking Up Strangers.”

Pam and I loved the show and wanted to learn line dance moves.
We started going to a place called Mardees in Okie City that grooves.
We learned the ” Cotten Eyed Joe” circle dance that we loved so,
And Mardees became our “in” Friday night cowboy spot to go.

Mardees served us a good steak before we got started learning more,
“Tulsa Time” was popular, so we learned Four Corners on the floor.
We still did our share of two stepping as we danced those lines too.
We just had to go back for more as we knew line dances all through.

.
Juice Newton’s “Queen Of Hearts” was popular way back then,
And we’re learned a line dance with some kicking that was really “in”.
We loved those stress relieving times drinking beer and dancing ,
With the cool new line dances we learned, we were just a prancing.

I recall Micky Gilley wearing a cowboy hat in the show with feathers
For a hat band and a fancy large piece in front of stones and leather.
It looked real cool and became the latest thing in cowboy hat wear.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but it influenced me, so a story I’ll share.

The feathers look a little goofy now, but at the time it seemed pretty cool.

I recently ran across some old pictures from those days in the City,
I had feathers on my hat similar to those Gilley wore in that ditty.
I have to admit, I looked like a young urban cowboy in those views,
Trying hard not to smile and spoil the very serious cowboy look too.

I’ve never seen a movie that had a greater affect on people’s lives,
And that made so many Friday night Cowboys that really jived.
I hear they are thinking about re releasing the show with new songs.
I doubt a new one will have the impact of the one that’s now gone.
