The Family Campfire

.

Sitting around a family campfire out in the Great Outdoors,
Warms the body and the heart right down to the core.
Our family campfires always brought us much pleasure,
And many fine memories that we shall always treasure.

Near South Fork, Colorado, we enjoyed many campfires,
Sitting around together as the flames went up higher.
Just telling each other of adventures from our day,
And sometimes a scary ghost story along the way.

.

Our children loved getting out by that fire so warm,
Roasting marshmallows on a stick with their charm,
Some would catch on fire and char completely black,
While others would melt and fall right off of the stick.

.

Around the campfire was a great place to turn loose,
And recall old memories while stretching the truth,
As with friends, we watched flames dancing in the air,
Dreaming of old times wishing we were back there.

At the campfire, we often enjoyed quiet talk so still,
While listening for the lonely call of the Whippoorwill.
Getting that “peaceful easy feeling” in that cool night air.
I can almost hear that lonesome call as I sit right here.

Sometimes when we would get together with friends,
At Grand Lake to visit and have some fun with them,
We would build a campfire down by the lake shore.
And roast weenies for hotdogs, a time we did adore.

Our family has a ritual we go through to light the campfire,
Our Boy Scout Carl gets one match in his camp attire,
To start the campfire and keep it burning so bright,
So far he has not failed to light our campfire just right.

Our grandchildren love campfire hot dog cook outs,
Having fun discussing how to do it right, no doubt.
“Should we hold high like Luke to slow cook our snack,
Or should we hold low like Zack to cook them all black.”

At Broken Bow Lake, we had a nice campfire ring,
With big rocks for the whole family to do our thing,
We spent a lot of time out there together in the evening,
Enjoying ourselves out there talking and dreaming.

We had the whole crew out there enjoying that campfire at Broken Bow Lake.  Kristi even made a campfire peach cobbler so good.

My daughter Kristi’s family like campfires so much,
That she put a campfire in her backyard with her touch,
Pam loves to sit out with our grandkids fixing s’mores.
Just loving the good times that she really does adore.

.

Pam and I don’t camp out anymore at our old age,
But our younger generation still enjoy that fun rage,
Kristi’s family even takes their big dogs to sit by the fire,
As they camp out together, a “natural high” to acquire.
