The Engineered Garden

The Engineered Garden

.

A young eager engineer wants to engineer just about everything
Sometimes with enough hard research, success he does bring
This poem tells of my own no experience garden growing trial.
That I engineered so fine with my daughter Kristi right on my trail.

The Engineered Garden

Some time after I got married and our first daughter came along.
We lived in Arroyo Verde near Fritch with family love so strong.
I was out of college with a bachelor of silence engineering degree,
Eager to try some of my newly learned skills for our new family

I was looking for family things for us to do in our free time there.
So I decided to grow a garden in our backyard, a family affair.
First I bought five of the best books on gardening to study through.
I read them all and started to layout a plan to engineer a garden too.

.

.

.

I laid out a plan for a L shaped garden along the fence in back,
And drew it up on an engineering plot then measured the track.
I dug out the grass and turned over the sandy soil in the area.
Then put up a foot high wooden fence to act as grass barrier.

.

.

.

Next I pre-fertilized the plot with an engineered blend fertilizer.
And let the plot rest as nature became my chemicals equalizer.
A planting schedule was next on my list of things to accomplish.
So we decided what to plant on our favorite eating food wish list.

.

.

.

In the books that I read, some good seed companies were listed.
I picked what I thought was the very best one and them enlisted.
Ordering varieties of seeds that had been grown before and tested.
Making sure to get them all ordered on time before I even rested.

.

.

.

I researched each item we planned to plant and scheduled plant days.
The schedule was over months with planning times along the way.
So I spent time optimizing each veggie on our long list in hand.
Our garden would be the best it could be, the best in the land.

.

.

.

I made a detailed drawing of our plot with optimum plant layout.
When planting days came, I marked seed location right on the plot,
Kristi and I planted each of them on the exact measured spot.
Kristi loved watching the things she planted grow big on our lot.

.

.

.

We put in 7 foot poles with climbing wires for beans to grow.
They grew to the top with hundreds of green beans for us to sow.
Our carrots were a foot long and the turnips as big as a baseball.
Our okra plants were six feet tall making okra right up to the fall.

.

.

.

We had radishes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash too that year.
I think Kristi liked our watermelons best as she gave them her care.
When they became big enough to eat she loved the sweet meat,
We canned pickles together as well as green beans for us to eat.

Our engineered garden turned out to be a great family fun event.
My time out in the back yard with Kristi was time so well spent.
She grows a garden every year with help from her children so dear.
I think they love gardening as much she did in her younger years.
