Sulphur Springs Roots

Sulphur Springs Roots

.

I found a book in the basement in a cover of blue,
Called “Sulphur Springs, Ark 1890 – 1990” so true,
Put together by the descendants of that small town,
Where my families roots went back far with much renown.

Sulphur Springs Roots

.

I’ve blogged a lot about about Sulphur Springs of late,
As we spent a lot of time there on our vacation slate,
I didn’t realize how deep our roots went in that town.
Until I read a history Dad and the Pages did write down.

.

If you will recall Frank Low was my Grandfather, so fine,
And Lucy (Page) Low was my Grandmother, so kind.
Their roots in Sulphur Springs went back a long ways
In the long history of the town to the very early days.

I went on one of these coon hunts with the Eldred boys in 1960.

.

I have reproduced from that fine book just below,
The individual write ups for the Pages and the Lows.
All the pictures in this blog were from that fine book,
But most of the pictures I used, my relatives took.

Mom and Dads Write Up

I guess “Kendrick” is a hard name to spell.

.

After reading this write up, I see I made a mistake,
In previous blogs where I did then sometimes state,
Dad went to school in Sulphur Springs back then,
As he moved to Onalaska at age two with a grin.

That’s Frank Low on the right with some kind of wild game.

.

So if you go back through and read those blogs sometimes,
Just grin and think, “the old man screwed up this rhyme,
As his Dad actually went to school in Onalaska then,”
And realize no one is perfect, but it’s not a big sin.

.

There was a picture of Frank Low in Sunday school,
As a very young boy in 1892 with his class so cool.
They all have on dress coats and short pants so sweet,
Looking very restless perhaps shuffling their feet.

The Kansas City Southern Railroad depot so brown
Was two blocks from my Grandparents home in town.
We often played in that abandoned building so near,
As we walked down there often when the skies were clear.

The Pages Write Up

Well look at that, someone spelled “Kendrick” right.

That swimming hole I swam in on our vacation fun,
Was there as early as 1918 out there in the warm sun,
As two of the Page boys I knew later as older men,
We’re on that rock dam, with the girls as they did swim.

I’ve told you before Aunt Edith (Page) Whaley so nice,
Worked in the Post Office as a post mistress with spice,
But I didn’t know her sister in law also worked there,
I’m sure they worked hard handling the mail with care.

The Methodist Church was just a block up the street,
From my Grandmothers home which was so neat,
As sometimes we went to bible school right there,
In the summer during vacation time that we did share.

This book will soon belong to younger members of family,
To keep for many of our future generations to the see.
Perhaps with the Hawg Jaw blogs and support things,
They will learn somethings about which they can sing.
