Fun With Cars

Getting to driving age is one of the things a teenager eagerly awaits. Sometimes in the early driving years, we do some things that are really stupid, but at the time it seemed like the fun derived was worth the risk. This story documents a couple of those stupid things we did.

Fun With Cars

Monroe’s Old Ford

About 1960, a high school buddy of mine named Monroe picked me up in his old 1951 ford and told me we were going to have some fun today. We drove out in the country and stopped where a railroad track crossed a county road. He got out and let some air out of his tires and slowly drove the ford onto the railroad tracks. I was surprised that the ford fit on the tracks. He then pulled the cars throttle out and we started moving down the tracks. He didn’t have either hand on the steering wheel and we stayed right on the tracks. He pulled out a six pack of beer and we chugged beer and enjoyed the scenery while the car rolled down the tracks. We went about thirty miles on the tracks and got off at another road crossing. He drove to a filling station and aired his tires back to normal and we went to the Post Drive In and hung out the rest of the evening. I have always wondered what would have happened if we had met a train on that track.

Billy Von’s Old Studebaker

.

Billy Von had a beat up old 1950 Studebaker that he cruised around Phillips, Texas in. One night he picked me and two more of his high school friends up and we hit the the road. He ask us if we had ever experienced the reverse donut. We had no clue what he was talking about, so he headed for the high school parking lot. The lot was gravel over dirt. He pulled into the center of the large lot and stopped. He pulled the steering as far to one side as it would go, put the car in reverse, and floor boarded it. We were going around and around backwards as fast as the car would go throwing up gravel and a large dust cloud. He kept it going for about ten minutes until one of the guys in the back seat got sick and puked out the window. We sat there for a while until the dizziness went away and then went to get some water balloons to throw at road signs.
