Self Entertainment

.

Back when I was about 6 or 7 years old, we had no electronic games or phones to keep us entertained. We had to use no cost items to entertain ourselves so we used what we could find. Herein is a few more of the ways we accomplished this.

My Mom and Dad took the Borger News Heard Newspaper when we lived on 3rd Street in Phillips. They always saved the old newspapers so we could use them to make our own toys with. One of my favorite things to do with them was to make hats out of them.

Here’s how we made those special newspaper hats we wore so proudly. If you used the comics pages, you could take it off and read it occasionally.

If you wore the hats with the long side to the front and back, you could play like you were soldier from the American Revolution fighting the British soldiers. But , if you wore the hat with the long side to the side, you could play like you were Black Beard the pirate burying treasure on some Tropical Island. How many kids do you see wearing a newspaper hat these days?. Let’s face it, the electronic games are more fun than the made up games we played. I think we were more physically fit that today’s kids, however.

We also used notebook paper to make all kinds of paper airplanes. We had time to perfect our designs and we knew which designs would fly long distance and which designs would do loops and circles when you tossed them into the air. Some of the designs would travel a block when there was a good breeze outside and they caught the breeze just right. I showed my grandson how to make a paper airplane and he just shrugged it off and asked me if he could buy a new app game on my iPad.

The kids all made paper poppers at school. You hold on to the tips and throw the thing holding onto the tips and the inside paper would pop out and make a very loud popping noise. It was, of course, the loud popping noise that made the no cost toy fun.

So these are just a few of the self entertainment things we did back when there was really not too much for kids to do.and we didn’t have any spending power at all.
