Pinky

Pinky

.
When animals are babies, they are so very soft, cuddly and cute,
But when they start to mature, they get ugly as up they do shoot.
This poem describes a time that I gave in to my girls request,
For a cute pup, that lost that look and grew up kind of ugly at best.

When we lived in Houston on Roebourne Street in the Piney Woods,
Our girls were out playing with the kids in our neighborhood.
A lady down the street with fuzzy puppies called them over to see,
And they came running home asking “Daddy, can we get a new puppy.”

They all look so cute at this age, but what will they grow into?.

.
I said “no we already have our toy poodle called Monet that we love,”
But they kept on working on me and they got Mom to give me a shove.
I finally gave in and they jumped for joy as they headed out the door.
Soon they came back home with a goldĀ
and white pup to adore.

The pup was kind of ugly to me as he looked like a little mongrel.
I suggested that the girls name him “Double Ug” but it didn’t sell.
He had a bright pink stomach with not too much hair down there,
The girls named him “Pinky” and he followed them around everywhere.

I could tell by the way this pup acted that he was just not too smart.
He pooped on the carpet and was a real dumb ass from the start,
So I built him a dog house and we moved him out to the backyard.
He chewed up everything in site, so I put it all up as a safety guard.

After three months theĀ pup grew from a cute little pup to a big dog.
As he was playful, the girls loved him, but he ate like a fat hog,
He knocked the girls around like little dolls when they played.
But they loved that ugly dog so I told them “careful” as I did pray.

One day we were heading for Tomball to buy some fresh peas,
And the girls begged to take big old Pinky for the ride, please.
I said “Okay, if you make sure he doesn’t chew on the stuff in the car,”
They said “we will watch him closely, and we are not going too far.

.

.

.

So off we went to Tomball with Pinky in the back seat with the girls.
When we got there, Kristi opened the back door and Pinky her did twirl,
As he had seen a dog, and then took off like a bat out of hell.
We watched him as he got to the dog, he tried to stop and then fell.

It was a huge German Shepard that was not in a very good mood.
Pinky turned running away as the angry German Shepard pursued.
The last time we saw old Pinky he was running across that field
Kicking up a brown dust cloud with that big dog right on his heels.

.

.

.

I always wondered if that Shepard ever caught old Pinky that day.
The girls were sad, but they recovered soon and went on their way.
I can’t say that I missed old Pinky too much after he was gone,
But I never got another big dog after my experience with that one.
