Phraseology

Many phrases have developed over the years that last forever,
I guess people relate to them perhaps because they are clever.
This poem reviews some phrases we have heard all our lives,
With some thoughts about each phrase from the old man side.

She’s got “a green thumb” infers the color of a females thumb.
A foreigner may think gangrene has set in, sounding so dumb,
But it really means she has an ability to make green things grow.
And everyone that’s been around a while surely this does know.

He “spilled the beans” suggests an accident dropping the beans.
Perhaps dropping a can of beans while in the kitchen scene,
But it means he let out the well kept secret for others to hear.
Perhaps making someone very angry at him that he may fear.

He was “caught red handed” sounds like he had paint on his hands,
From painting something red for a big surprise for her so grand,
But it means getting caught in the act of a crime or a bad deed,
Perhaps even with blood on his hands for being a bad seed.

She was “balling the Jack” infers she was copulating with Jack,
Which might be a very fun thing to do laying there on her back,
But it actually does mean she was moving as fast as she can,
At what ever she was doing, like fast dancing with some man.

Yesterday he “kicked the bucket” infers he played kick the can,
With the other kids in the neighborhood hiding on the lamb.
But it really means he died and perhaps went on up to heaven,
Making his family very sad remembering him when he was living.

She “gave him the cold shoulder” infers she gave him a big ham.
To put in the refrigerator to fix later with pineapple and jam.
But it really is the way to tell someone he is just not welcome.
By ignoring him when you don’t want to be around him for fun.

He said “blood is thicker that water” sounding like a lab test,
He was running to find the viscosities to see which is the thickest.
But it really means family is always the most important thing,
Always loving them no matter what problems that our lives bring.

She said I’m going “to go cold turkey” inferring a lunch order to go.
For a sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise for show.
But it really means to stop something abruptly like smoking
Those nasty cigarettes that cause cancer and I’m not joking.

He said “it’s all Greek to me” like he was reading Greek words,
Which he did not really seem to understand feeling like a nerd.
But it really means something is almost incomprehensible to him,
Because of the complexity of what ever he was reviewing then.

As you can see, we use many odd phrases in our everyday press,
That have implied meanings not too easily understood unless,
You were born and raised right here in our great American nation,
Making it very difficult to understand by our foreign relations.
