Misery

 Misery

.

There are a few things that we do over our life times that really make us miserable for a while. Fortunately, most of them are short time events and we recover quickly. Here are a few of my misery makers.

Feeding Frenzy

.

On several occasions I have been on summer camping trips when I forgot to bring the mosquito repellant and any kind of mosquito netting. The little biting pests can usually be fought off during the day by swatting, slapping, and waving. But when night time comes you just can’t fight them off once you’ve gone to sleep. So you end up sticking your head inside the zipped up sleeping bag and burning up in the heat, or leaving your head out for the Mosquitos to have a feeding frenzy sucking your blood all night making welts all over your face and neck. Either way, you are miserable all night long.

Hundreds of these blood suckers swarming over you while you are trying to to sleep with no protection is enough to make anyone miserable.

The Hangover

.

I can recall a few times I have gone out drinking on a week night when I had to go to work the next day. First I didn’t get near enough sleep because I stayed up to late, so I didn’t want to get up in the first place. The worst part is the pounding in my head that feels like and explosion going of in my head every second or so. The vision is somewhat blurry and I have a terrible case of cotton mouth. When I get to work, I feel guilty because I am unable to function normally and I spent all morning drinking one cup of coffee after another. I am truly miserable all day long and I finally make it home swearing I will never ever do it again as I fall into bed when I get home.

Nothing makes you more miserable than trying to function normally with a big hangover. Looks like we would learn not to go out partying on a work night. I have to admit, I put myself through this misery more times than I should have when I was single.

Chiggers

.

I recall one time when I was a lad that I laid down in a grassy field in Arkansas one time and must have laid right in the middle a a giant chigger city. That evening there wasn’t a spot on my entire body that didn’t have a chigger bite. Everyone knows how bad just one chigger bite can itch. That’s how my entire body felt. My grandmother painted each and every one of them with clear nail polish to kill them, but the damage was already done and my body was itching all over making me totally miserable for two straight days.

It’s hard to believe a pest as small as a chigger could make you so miserable, but when you get a thousand or so working on you at the same time, the misery can be almost intolerable.
