Letters To Home

Letters To Home

.

While in Vietnam, I wrote a lot of letters to Mom and Dad,
To keep them informed on their handsome young lad.
My Mom saved each letter and filed them in a book,
So later in life her son could again take another look.

I ran across that fine book of letters just a while ago,
And took a look at what I had to say there on the go.
I thought I would share a couple of those letters herein,
To see what a Vietnam soldier had on his mind then.

When I mailed those letters home to Mom to see,
They went air mail and all of the postage was free.
This made it mighty easy for soldiers just like me,
To keep in very close touch with their entire family.

The first letter talks of some incoming action on that day,
VC fired rockets and mortars from the jungle our way.
In fact they attacked many out posts all over that day.
On some kind of offensive they mounted to slay.

There was a letter I sent that I enclosed local currency,
So I took a picture of that Vietnam money for you to see.
The money actually looks pretty good for that place,
We called the “arm pit of the world” with a straight face.

The next letter was written April 17, 1970, over there,
I mention my cousin Ricky who was also there, somewhere.
I had made a sketch of our room in our hootch on the Hill,
To show them how I lived there, such a great thrill.

My cousin Rick also wrote letters home to his family.
Our parents met together in the evenings for tea,
And they read our letters together as good company,
To share there sons thoughts written for them to see.

On one occasion, I found a cartoon to send to them.
I labeled Aunt BuelDine and Mom and sent that gem.
And I know they all rolled in the floor laughing loud,
As it reminded me so much of them out in a crowd.

I guess my Mom kept everything I did send her back then,
As she filed every single letter I ever wrote to them.
My letters from Texas Tech as a student were in there too.
I guess all Moms tend to be that way about their crew.
