Hugo Leo Lardo Low

Hugo Leo Lardo Low

.

We had a dog named Hugo that was more than a pet,
He was a hunting partner we will never ever forget.
This poem describes his adventures with my family.
He was the very best hunting dog we ever did see.

.

We had a black and brown dachshund Mom named Hugo.
My brother and I extended this name to Hugo Leo Lardo Low.
We taught him to point birds and to always be on the hunt.
We could sic him on anything even though he was a a runt.

.

He followed us when down to the canyon country we went.
You could only see his tail in the tall green grass that bent.
He would chase a cotton tail right down in a dark deep hole
And follow him down deep in the hole like a ground mole.

.

He grabbed him by the butt with his long sharp dog canines,
And would come out of the hole with the rabbit by the behind.
This was quite a little hunter we trained with our best skills.
When we whistled real loud, he came running ready to kill.

.

One time my Dad and I took him on fishing trip from the bank.
We were working the rocks, jigging our baits in after they sank.
We heard Hugo barking on the side of the hill down to the lake,
He was running near a mesquite bush without taking a break.

.

We saw a 5 foot rattlesnake was coiled near the bush.
My Dad ran up to the car and got a shovel in a real rush.
He killed the rattlesnake with with a single shovel stroke.
Then pulled out a Winston cigarette and started to smoke.

.

Hugo was walking slow and his head had begun to swell.
We may have trained our dog Hugo to hunt a little too well.
We packed up our gear and went to the vet in Borger town.
Hugo was hunting soon as a snake bite didn’t keep him down.

.

One time a skunk moved in under our porch in the front.
Hugo could smell him and went outside to begin the hunt.
It wasn’t long until he found him and a fight did soon begin.
Hugo got his face sprayed and the skunk was never seen again.

.

It took a week to get the stink off of Hugo Leo Lardo Low.
And we used the back door for a full week too, you know.
Hugo was with us when we slept out in the back yard.
He stayed there all night and was a very good guard.

Grandmother, when can we use the front door again. That’s the neighbors beagle on the back porch.
