Home Cooked Catfish
There’s a couple of places we go in Bartlesville to get some excellent home cooking style catfish. Both places have catfish only one day each week. If we’re in town, we try to go both days because the catfish is so good. Here’s the story.
Home Cooked Catfish
Pam and I have lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, for about 32 years. In the past 10 years, we have kind of gotten into a routine and we have home cooked catfish at the same restaurants every week. On Tuesdays, we go to a home cooking style restaurant called the Burger Hop. We have been there eating so many Tuesday’s that the owners know us and we know them quite well. The Burger Hop is located at 900 SW Frank Phillips Blvd. it is not much to look at from the outside, but the food is good. The owner/cook cuts the catfish fillets into chunks about 2 inches long by 2 inches wide. He dips them in a corn meal and flour mixture and deep fries them to a golden brown. They always give me more than I can eat and it always always comes out hot. The catfish is so good and it never has the slightest fishy taste. I always get mine with fried potatoes with onions and brown beans with corn bread. This is a meal we simply just never get tired of, so we show up every Tuesday, but you have to get there by 11:30 AM if you want to be sure you get the catfish. They often run out by Noon.
Since this was catfish day at the Burger Hop, I stopped out front and took a photo of Pam under the sign and a shot of the front of the restaurant. It’s not real fancy, but the food is very good.
Today happened to be Tuesday, so I took a picture of my catfish meal just after they set it on our table. As usual the catfish was hot and the fried potatoes were loaded with onions. I just need a little tobasco sauce for my beans and I’m ready to dine. As usual, the catfish was superb.
On Fridays, we go to a another home cooking style restaurant called Weeze’s Cafe located at 328 South Dewey Street. We know the owners of this restaurant also. We like the breakfasts here and nearly everything on the regular menu, but the catfish on Friday is especially good. They deep fry their catfish dipped in a flour and corn meal mix in whole side fillets. It’s a little different style and it always comes out hot, just the way we like it. Yummy! At Weeze’s, I always get my catfish with their home style French fries, bacon flavored green beans, and a hot roll. Again, if you want the catfish at Weeze’s on Friday, you better get there by 11:30 AM or it will be gone too.
Pam and I with Ben and Sarah after having a satisfying meal at Weeze’s Cafe in Bartlesville. The grandchildren love to have breakfast at Weeze’s with us.
The catfish plate at Weeze’s Cafe is divine. I like to pull the catfish fillet’ into two halves and break off chunks with my fingers and dip it into their homemade tartar sauce. Ummmm great eating!
Weeze’s cafe is also our favorite place in town to get breakfast. When anyone including our grandchildren comes to visit us, we always take them there for breakfast. The featured picture above is my brother Craig and his wife Rhonda sitting out in front of Weeze’s Cafe after we had just finished a great breakfast. They are holding up Flat Stanley who was fixing to go on a long cruise to Australia with them. (That’s another Story).
Pam and I have kind of become set in our ways in our golden years. When we find something good, we try to stick with it. Are we caught in a rut? I don’t think so, we just enjoy eating good food while we still can.
