Hip High Cast

Hip High Cast

.

In 1988 while skiing at Breckenridge out in Colorado,
I had a bad fall and my leg popped loud and hurt so.
I went to the doctor in Breckenridge on that very day.
Who put on a temporary leg wrap and send me away.

When I got home, a knee specialist I got right in to see,
Who told me I pulled the ligament into on my right knee.
In addition to that, I had broken my lower right tibia bone.
He operated then to repair the ligament and make it one.

When I woke up, the Doctor was putting a cast on my limb,
He had plaster on his face, in his hair, and all over him.
The cast ran from my groin area and right butt cheek,
On down and around my foot like a boot with a toe peek.

I walked out of the hospital on crutches in a hip high cast,
Very slowly as I could feel a lot of pain if I walked to fast.
I pretty much sat at home two weeks in my old easy chair,
Letting my knee heal underneath that hip high cast there.

I was starting to get restless just sitting around all the time,
So Pam started taking me to watch them clog in a line.
I enjoyed getting out and moving around with the family,
After clogging, they wheeled me around the mall happily.

At week four, I was able to go the the movies at the mall,
Then go shopping in the wheel chair while having a ball.
Things were getting better and I felt much better then
Except for the constant itching under the cast from within.

At week five, I had fun writing graffiti on the cast surface.
I drew all over the cast while sitting there in my solace.
There was some pretty cool looking stuff that I drew,
To pass some time just to have something cool to do.

At week six, I went back to work for half days feeling free,
By noon my leg hanging down swelled tight on my knee,
Causing so much pain until I got home and elevated it.
By bed time it was back down to normal again feeling fit.

One morning when I came into work I was at the elevator,
It was closing fast so I stuck my crutch between the doors.
The thing grabbed my crutch and shut down right there,
With me on one crutch and a cast hung getting big stares.

They got me out of my mess and gave me a safety talk,
About sticking crutches in elevators while trying to walk.
The next time I waited for the next elevator to get there,
Like I should have done the time before, I do declare.

Listen Mr Bill, we don’t stick crutches in elevators to hold them.

At week ten I went in to get my cast removed so happy.
The doctor cut it off in ten minutes seeming real snappy.
He said that I may get a little sick for a while feeling bad,
I told him you’re wrong about that, I feel like a new lad.

I walked out of the room on my crutches and got so dizzy,
So I stopped in the waiting room and sat down in a tizzy.
The whole room was spinning around for a long while,
I finally got up and walked on out and barfed a big pile.

When I recovered from the shock of not having that cast,
I did feel better than I had felt in the three months past.
I learned to walk with a cane well before I was through,
It took a whole year to get back to normal feeling like new.
