Happenings

Sometimes things happen in our lives that put us in danger. I have written this poem about a few of the happenings in my life that caused me a lot of misery. Be safe out there as you live in the world today.

Happenings

When I was two, I had a press fitted coke bottle lid in my mouth.
I was running along and I fell on the floor right there in the house.
The sharp rimmed coke lid cut a deep gash right in my tongue.
My mouth filled with blood and Mom thought I would die young.

.

To the ER I did go and my tongue cut they did stitch real fine.
They made me eat soft stuff for a long while to keep me in line.
My tongue it did heal but it did leave a long rough ugly scar.
No one could see it, but it’s still there on this very old dinosaur.

.

When I was three, my Mom cut off my finger with a rocking chair.
I was falling to sleep and my hand fell to the boards under there.
My finger was whacked and I screamed at the top of my voice,
My Mom panicked and brought my finger to the ER by choice.

.

The doctor could not reattach my finger so in the trash it did go.
From that time on, my middle finger was short 1/4 inch or so.
You cannot tell unless you look closely when I flip you the bird.
Then you can see the angled finger top as you call me a dog turd.

.

When I was five, we were in Borger at Jim’s Grocery store.
We came out and had to cross the street to get to our ford.
I broke from Moms hand and ran fast to get across the street.
And didn’t see the car that was coming that I was about to meet.

.

My timing was good and I hit right in the middle of the car door.
I bounced right off clear of the wheels, but hit the road real sore.
This scared me as much as it scared my Mom, this I do know.
From that time on, I held on to her hand tight and never let go.

.

When I was 10, I went fishing with my Dad at a small lake.
It was very low and the banks were as soft as cheese cake.
I was fishing along and decided to go all the way round.
I was walking along and I started sinking straight down.

.

I said a prayer asking for help and stopped sinking as my nose hit.
I  thanked the Lord and swam out of the very deep mud pit.
I got out and walked back around to the point I did begin.
And stripped raw naked, washed my clothes, then jumped in.

.

When I was 19, Rick, Dickie and I went to a drive in movie show.
At the end, cars were six deep at the exit to the road you know.
We were hit from the side and we were all knocked out cold.
By a speeding car whose driver was drinking beer, we were told.

.

They pulled us out and we lost our friend Dickie that awful night.
I still think about how we could change that night to make it right.
But, I have yet not figured out how we could change the past.
I do thank the good Lord that Rick and I were spared the worst.

.

When I was 53, I had some back pain that sent me to the ER.
They sent me home twice, but bad pain sent me back by car.
They found my Aorta Artery enlarged and leaking inside of me.
And rushed me to Tulsa in an ambulance leaking blood internally.

.

I was prepped and ready for operation in ten minutes flat.
They repaired my artery with an internal stint of plastic mat.
The Doctor told me only one of ten survive in my condition.
Again I thanked the Lord for life in my very bad position.

.

Fortunately, I have not had too many happenings in my time.
Otherwise, I might not be here and to me that would be a crime.
So I work real hard to keep myself protected from danger.
To get a little older before I meet my very last cliff hanger.
