Our Family Traditions

I don’t think I ever thanked my Mom and Dad for our traditions,
We carried them all with us to our family with much repetition.
So with this poem I do thank them and hope they remain in tact,
For future generations of our families, and that is a real fact

On New Year’s Day, my Mom always cooked a big ole ham.
With black eyed peas for good luck, and some candied yams.
She also always had some souse meat as it brought good health,
Look this up and see what’s in it, and you’ll wonder why they sell it.
.

.
On valentines day, all of us kids made valentines for the kids at school,
My Mom always bought those candy hearts with writing so cool,
Like “Hug Me”, “Be Mine”, Let’s Kiss”, “Love You”, and “Be True”.
Mom made it so fun for my sister, my brother, and I as we grew.

.
When we lost a baby tooth as we grew older when being raised,
We would put the tooth under our pillow and then we prayed.
Sometime during the night, the Tooth Fairy would just appear,
And leave us a shiny new fifty cent piece under the pillow there.
.

.
On the night before Easter, we would all go to bed feeling dandy,
In the morning, the Easter Bunny had left us a whole basket of candy.
We had chocolate bunnies, candy eggs, and all colors of jelly beans.
We ate them all day long until all of our baskets were eaten clean.
.

Mom took us to church on Easter Sunday so she could show
Us about the resurrection of Jesus Christ on this day you know.
In the afternoon, we all headed out to hunt the Easter eggs,
Sometimes we found a prize egg and jumped up on both legs

On  of our birthdays, we all had a fine happy birthday party,

We invited all of our friends and none were ever very tardy.
We had ice cream and cake then they sang us Happy Birthday.
And then came the best part of all, opening our presents, I say.
.

.
0n Independence Day, we always had a family picnic together
With both my aunts and uncles families in the very hot weather.
We had fried chicken, baked beans, and potato salad in the shade.
As we shot off all our fireworks, a big commotion we made.
.

.
Halloween was very special to us as we dressed like monsters,
We trick or treated all over our town with the other youngsters.
My Mom and Dad stayed at home and handed out good treats,
We collected huge bags of candy that we took home to eat.

On Thanksgiving Day, we had Turkey and Ham and all the trim,
With our area family in one of our homes in town filled to the brim.
On a few special occasions we traveled to Sulphur Springs,
And had dinner at grandmothers house, what food she did bring.
.

.
On Christmas Eve our family’s met and exchanged our gifts,
Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ hoping our lives to lift.
We served lots of great snacks as we celebrated it there,
Enjoying ourselves and our gifts as young people learning to care.
.

.
We turned in early that night hoping Santa soon would be there.
About five in the morning, we ran to the tree and it was not bare.
Old Santa did stop at our house and left us presents galore.
Everything we asked for was there, just like we had seen in the store.
.

.
On Christmas Day, we had lots of new things with which to play,
Mom fixed the Turkey with all the trimmings, a fine meal I say.
We took a little time to remember just what we were celebrating,
To try to keep Christ in Christmas while enjoying what we were eating.
.

.
On New Year’s Eve, we tried to stay up and bring in the new year,
My Mom would drink hot tea, and Dad had sweet red wine for cheer.
We had root-beer to drink as we toasted and brought the year in,
Hoping the new year would be as good as the last year had been.
