Ernest Tubb

Ernest Tubb

Over the years I have grown to love some of Ernest Tubb’s honky tonk music. Most young people don’t even know who he is and what he did for country music. Here’s a little of my experience with him.

Ernest Tubb

From the time I was about 18 when I first started going to the honky tonks drinking beer, I started listening to Ernest Tubb on the Juke Box. He had several songs on every juke box and nearly every one had “Waltz Across Texas” on them. When I first heard old Ernest, I was not too impressed. But the more I heard that hardcore honky tonk style of singing he did, the more it grew on me. Ernest Tubb And His Texas Troubadours became a favorite of mine that I have grown to love even more over the years. I often heard people say “That guy couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket”, but there’s something about his music that makes the beer taste much better and go down very smoothly. If you’re out on the dance floor at a honky tonk dancing to ET, your feet just two step naturally to that raw honky tonk style of his and you just seem to float across that floor.

Some of my favorite ET songs are “Waltz Across Texas”, “Pass The Booze”, “Little Ole Band Of Gold”, and ” Thanks Alot”. These are all songs from the 1960s which were popular then. His earlier stuff is a bit too raw for even me. Several of the newer artists have paid him tribute by adding his bands trade mark guitar licks in their songs. Alabama’s song “Juke Box In My Mind” and Vern Gosdin’s “Set Em Up Joe” are examples of this.

Here’s a link to a Spotify Playlist with some of the songs mentioned above.

We made several trips to Nashville when we were in the clogging phase of our lives. On each trip, we went downtown and spent several hours in the Ernest Tubb record shop. I loved looking at all the old photos they had posted in the back.

This is a fun place to visit if you ever get to Nashville.
