The Cowboy In Me

The Cowboy In Me

I believe we all have a little cowboy in us. We need to help that cowboy get out in the open and have some real cowboy fun. When I let my cowboy out, Pam and I had some of the best times of our lives. The cowboy doesn’t care what other people think, he just has a fun time. Let your cowboy out and get out there and enjoy yourself. Here’s a few words about my cowboy.

The Cowboy In Me

I think I have always had a little cowboy in me. When I was 6 years old, I would walk to the local movie house with my sister JerrylDine and pay 10 cents to see Roy Rogers and Dale Evans catch all the bad guys every Saturday morning. Later it was John Wayne that became a role model for a lot of young men like me. As I grew older I found I had always had a little cowboy in me as I liked to wear the hats, boots, belt, jeans, and shirts of the cowboy. It always made me feel a little tougher and braver when I was a cowboy. Once I got a few beers in me, I felt like Travis Tritts “Ten feet tall and bulletproof,” or perhaps like Arron Tippens “Honky Tonk Superman”.

There was an old song that Garth Brooks did called “The Cowboy Song” that always made you feel like you were right out there on the range with the rest of the wranglers that I just loved. I sometimes listen to it just to get the Cowboy in me stirring a little. If you never listened to it, you should sit down, grab a beer and give it a listen. You’ll find yourself right out there too. The link to the song on YouTube is given below.

Another cowboy song that I really like is called “The Cowboy In Me” by Tim McGraw which infers we all have a little cowboy in us. I can tell you one thing, I always had more fun when the cowboy in me was hanging out. Here’s a link to that song on YouTube if you haven’t heard it, maybe you can find your cowboy too.

My family does have a few cowboy roots which may be the reason it feels so right to be a cowboy. My Grandmother, Aurora Bell, was kin to the Cody’s and she always told me my fifth great uncle was Buffalo Bill Cody. He was one of the more famous frontiersmen.

Our families also had some cowboy relatives that weren’t so famous. In fact they may have been a little notorious.

One of the Long boys on the left is a notorious relative of the my daughters husband who ran in the Pawhuska area.      One of the Slatten boys on the right is a notorious relative of ours. These wild looking young cowboys looked like they enjoyed having a good time.

My sister JerryDine and I both had a little cowboy in us starting at a very young age. I sometimes wonder how I missed out on the Rodeo circuit when I got old enough. It always felt good to dress up in western clothes.

My sister JerrylDine and I looked like we were natural born cowboys on that horses back headed out to wrangle some cattle. Mom inspired the cowboy in us with these outfits.

To tell you the truth, I never did much like to ride horses, so I guess I could never have been a real cowboy. However, I did figure out I could have a lot of fun being a cowboy on Friday and or Saturday night at any old large honky tonk two stepping the night away with my lovely wife Pam. She had a little cowboy in her too. We had so many good times and made many memories we will never forger.
