The Big Black Dog

The Big Black Dog

We have always liked dogs, but on one occasion my patience was tried severely because of one Big Black Dog my daughter, Kristi, brought home. Here’s the dog tale.

The Big Black Dog

Our daughter, Kristi, worked as a counselor at a summer camp for kids near Wagner, Oklahoma when she was going to OSU. On one occasion, she brought home a big black dog to our home in Bartlesville. I reluctantly agreed to let her keep the dog there for the remainder of the summer before she went back to school. The dog was a huge black dog about the size of a Labrador Retriever. It was one of those type dogs that liked to jump up on you and lick you and knock things over as it ran through the house.

The first time we left, we left the dog running loose in the house. It chewed up a couple of pairs of my shoes and crapped a turd as big as a banana on the light colored carpet. I told Kristi to figure something else out because that big dog was not running loose in the house anymore. So she decided to lock him in the front bathroom the next time we left. When we got got back, the dog had scratched the inside of the door up and shredded the sheer white lace curtains on the window in the bathroom. That was the last straw. I told Kristi that the dog could no longer set foot in my house.

She bought a 10 foot chain and chained him to the big Pin Oak tree in the back yard. I thought,…..” well maybe the property damage will stop now… “. On our back porch, we had three 6 x 8 inch cedar posts supporting the roof. The dog could reach the posts from his tie point on the tree. In two days, the dog chewed almost all the way through one of the support posts and started on another one. A 10 foot long 6 x 8 inch cedar post cost about $200 each. The dog had managed to do more damage outside the house than inside the house.

I think it cost me about $500 to have that big black dog at my house for two weeks. I gave Kristi instructions to never bring another dog home that crapped turds bigger than my little finger. I think she eventually found a home for the dog on a farm out in the country.

Kristi still has a thing for big dogs even today. Her family has a Brittany Spaniel named Scout that weighs in at about 80 pounds. The dog is truly wonderful with her children. Although, it is a bird dog with certain instincts, they have some baby chicks that follow the dog around like an old mother hen. They keep him in the house most of the time. The most destructive thing about this dog is his farts. He will clear the room in a hurry when he’s cutting the cheese.
