Grand Lake Weekends

Grand Lake Weekends

For a while in the late 1990s, we made weekend trips to the lake,
We did several of the activities we loved on our weekend break.
This poem tells a little about how we worked the fun stuff in.
Just having a ball on our terrific monthly Grand Lake Weekend.

During the late 1990’s, Pam and I were in our Honky Tonk Years,
We got a reservation at a dinner motel, Grove was very near.
They had a fine restaurant there with awesome T-bone steaks,
Where we enjoyred dinner fueling up for two stepping at the lake.

The owner of the place had once been a Country radio DJ.
He had a collection of classic country records that he did play,
On a radio station turntable with 500 watt speakers so fine.
He took requests so I could hear those favorite tunes of mine.

We drove over on Friday evening just after I got off of work,
Stopping at the antique stores buying old records going berserk.
We got to the motel about 7:30 PM and checked into our room.
Freshened up, put on the boots and hat, knowing we would eat soon

Hunting for those old rare Country LP’s and 45’s was one of my favorite things to do. Wow, I found the first LP Hank Thompson ever cut.

We began our dinner at 8 PM with a trip to a very large salad bar.
They would bring us a large T-bone steak grilled to a fine char,
With a hot baked potato with lots of butter to make it taste good.
They made their own Indian bread to top off all on the great food.

That steak was so good that it just made you feel good all over when you ate it.

We then got a good table adjacent to the big hardwood floor.
And ordered drinks as the DJ started at 9 PM with music galore.
We would request “Pride” by Ray Price to start our first dance,
We danced counter clockwise on that floor with our own stance.

You know Pam, I just love this place with the good old country music to dance to.

The old country music was good all night long making us high,
And the beer made us a little higher right up there in the sky.
We loved that music as we danced all night until we were tired.
Then walked to our motel room there where we both did retire.

We slept in Saturday morning until about 10 AM feeling great,
As we made a couple of old antique stores and then we ate.
After lunch, we went to Grand Lake and fished for white bass
Until about 6 PM, when we packed our gear and hauled ass.

Man it’s fun to catch these big old hard fighting White Bass.

During our honky tonk years, we did this about every four weeks
The club later brought in fine country music bands we did seek.
Our favorite band, “Cotton Creek Band” played there a lot.
We made all the dances they played at our favorite lake spot.

We always had a great time on our overnight trips to Grand Lake.
As fine eating, dancing, antiquing, and fishing time we did take,
Four of the things we just loved to do wrapped up into one trip,
Made us so happy that we wanted to jump and do back flips.
