Are Good Deeds Rewarded?

Good deeds do seem to be rewarded based on my experiences, but I’ll let you draw your own conclusions. Here’s the story.

Are Good Deeds Rewarded?

Along about 1996, my wife Pam and I had made a trip to Las Vegas with my wife’s brother Buffalo Bob and his wife Brenda. We stayed at “Circus, Circus” in free rooms. The slots were treating us bad so we drove out to Hoover Dam and took the tour. On the way back we stopped at a Luby’s Cafeteria and had lunch. On the way out of the cafeteria there was a scraggly looking guy standing by the door who approached me and said my family is hungry, can you spare a little money. I felt genuine compassion for him and I handed him a $10 bill. He said bless you sir and went on his way. When we got back to the casino, we headed for the slots to try our luck again. I sat down at a 25 cent machine and I started dropping quarters. After I had pulled the slot lever a couple of times, a 10X 10X  Triple bar rolled up for $1000. I quit for the trip and took the money home.

 

When I was in London in 1998, there was a poor man begging for money. He said “sir can you spare a few shillings so I can feed my family tonight.” I reached in my pocket and pulled out all the British coins I had accumulated on the trip. ( about 60 dollars US)  He said “Thank you kind sir” and walked away. When we got home from the trip there was a memo on my desk that our group were one of the top Company performers for the past year and we were all getting a big bonus.

 

He said “thank you kind sir for helping to feed my family”. I looked back as I was walking away just in time to see him duck into an English Pub on the corner.

On one of our trips to the Cherokee Casino in Tulsa, there was a man standing on the corner at the traffic light at the highway exit into the Casino with a sign that said “Vietnam Vet could use a little help”. I got caught at the light and I called him over and gave him a $10 bill and we went on into the Casino. I sat down at a Crazy Bill $5 machine and put in a $20 bill and punched the button 3 times and hit the Double Double Triple bar for a $1200 jackpot. After they paid me, I played the same machine some more and almost immediately another $1200 jackpot rolled up. There was a scruffy looking guy with a fedora hat standing behind me watching who said “sir you have had some good fortune today and I haven’t eaten for two days, could you spare me enough money to eat today?” I handed him a twenty and he went on this way. Pam and I moved to a $10 machine in the high stakes room and put in a couple of hundred and the Double Double Seven rolled up for $3200. We left the Casino in a good mood that night.

The sign the guy was holding up hit my soft spot and I handed him a $10 bill. Good fortune came us that day.

This was the $3200 part of our good fortune that evening at Cherokee Casino.

On another occasion, we were heading for The Creek Casino in Tulsa and stopped at Luby’s Cafeteria for dinner. When we came out of the cafeteria, a black guy came up to me and said his mother was sick and he needed gas money to get to her house to help her. I gave him a $10 bill and we went on to the Casino. That night we hit 13 Jackpots and we brought home $40,000 in cash. I heard later that they had just been audited and were way behind on their payouts so we were fortunate to be there gambling that night.

Just a small portion of our good fortune that night at Creek Casino. I always wondered if the guy got to his mother to help her.

So I ask you, do you think our good fortune resulted from the good deeds or was this just coincidence. I don’t know, but every time I see someone that looks like they need some help, I try to help them if I can.
