The Piney Woods

The Piney Woods

.

Tall pine trees with big pine cones and needles so green,
Are a favorite tree of mine that to me look so keen,
They appeal to my sight and my sense of smell to,
With that fresh outdoors aroma they bring to you.

The Piney Woods

.

When we went to Colorado, I often walked in the woods,
In the Rio Grande National Forest under tall pine tree hoods,
There was a thick carpet of brown pine needles everywhere,
From past years of dropping old needles under there.

Walking on the soft needles was very easy on the feet,
Making walking out there in the forest so very sweet.
Those walks back then were very good for my soul,
As I still remember them well after I got very old.

I can still feel that light summers cool breeze on my face,
As I started walking up the trail going no special place.
I can see the big piney tree forest as I walk on along,
Ready to enter those piney woods feeling so strong.

In the air was the fresh scent of pine that I loved so much,
The pine branch needles hung down so sharp to my touch.
With giant pine cones like decorations God had put there.
The tall pine trees just awed me while holding my stare.

Wildlife was abundant out there running so free,
In those giant trees that always dwarfed little ole me.
There were red squirrels on the branches eating cones,
And all kind of birds nesting in the high branch zones.

On the ground among the pine needles running around,
Are several cute little chipmunks looking so profound.
They scurry around, then stop and stand up on two feet,
Looking so cute holding a nut in their paws to eat.

The red headed woodpecker pulled those insects out,
Of the bark of the pines standing out there so stout.
I loved to hear his tap tap taping while working so hard,
Scratching the back of the tall pines in God’s back yard.

Up on a high limb just looking so wise, I see an owl,
Looking mean with big horns as he gives me a scowl.
He is looking for chipmunks that run free on the ground,
To feed his chicks in that big nest up there so round.

Suddenly I hear a loud noise there off to my right,
So I stop and crouch down there and see quite a sight.
It’s a majestic bull elk heading to the Rio Grande River,
To drink that cool river water, that to him is a life giver.

It’s getting late in the evening as the sun starts to set,
The light streaming through the pines is taking my breath.
Natures awesome beauty floats me up on a natural high,
As many beautiful bright colors are now filling the sky.

I miss those walks that I took out in the piney woods,
Back when I was younger still strong feeling good.
Take time to get out there and enjoy life while you can.
You will keep the memories with you as an old man.
