The Old Trunk

The Old Trunk

.

There’s a old trunk we have in our home full to the top,
With old family treasures from far in the past we love a lot.
The things inside are not valuable to any one but us,
So here’s a peek at the things that we pulled out first.

Today we pulled out part of the treasures in the trunk,
Which to most would likely be considered just junk.
So I’ll discuss each item just a little so you know why,
They make my heart race and my old memories fly.

.

First we pulled out a box with two old braids of hair.
There was a note saying they belonged to a lady fair,
Named Aurora Bell Kendrick when she was young,
A memory of my grandmother who was special to everyone.

Aurora Bell at a young age looking lovely.

Next, we pulled out a large folded American flag.
The flag is like new made before 1940 and not a rag.
This flag was given to my grandmother, Lucy Low,
When her son , Dean, was killed when his ship did blow.

There was some of my Dads Navy things there to be seen,
A dress belt, name tag, and dress tie were there so keen,
There was a nice Navy Sea Bee wooden plaque for his unit,
While in the Philippines doing his duty to get through it.

There was an Ada High School football letter with two bars,
That Pam’s Dad won many years ago as a big star.
He was voted the all around best athlete in his days,
At that small Oklahoma school where he often did play.

.
Some of my old toys were in that trunk down on one side,
My old teddy bear with one eye, a torn ear, and a dirty hide,
Was in there with a Mickey Mouse projecter so blue,
With a Black Sambo Book, and view master slides too,

Also in the old trunk was my brown real leather gun set,
I wore the gun out so it was as gone as it could get.
But a belt, bullet holders, holster and badge survived,
As they made things good back when to me they arrived.

That pistol in my cousin Mikes hand was the one that slid into the holster above.

..

There was also some of my Cub and Boy Scout things there,
I found my Cub Scout Belt and Boy Scout slide, a nice pair.
My Boy Scout and Cub Scout Handbooks were there too.
At a time years ago, I read each of them all the way through.

Also in the trunk was a rolled up original picture inside,
Drawn by my daughter Kristi at age six at Moms home site.
Mom entered the drawing in the Phillips Free Fair,
And the drawing got a first place ribbon from judges there.

We’ve got a ways to go to finish looking inside the trunk,
And I’ll be back into it looking with a lot of fresh spunk.
I know there is more good memories inside to excite me,
I will blog again when we dig deeper inside to see.
