Texas Tech Life

Attending school at a big college we should all just not miss.
The atmosphere was great and Tech loyality was part of this.
The poem describes a little of what life was like there for me,
While getting educated and getting that engineering degree.

Texas Tech Life

.

My first year at Texas Tech, I lived on the third floor of Wells Hall.
My cousin Rick was my only roommate in 1963 in the first Fall.
Our room had a sink, but showers and toilets were down the hall.
The rooms were comfortable with closets that were kind of small.

.

We were mostly paying our own way, so we didn’t date much.
We ate in the cafeteria for all meals except Sunday at lunch
They had cow tongue sandwiches that we would not eat.
So we ate out in Lubbock at cafés that were very cheap.

.

When we went down to eat we would go early before time,
And sit in the floor until they opened that cafeteria line.
We played card games like Red Ass and FYB until the time came.
We had fun and got a little loud as we played those card games.

.

We walked all over the campus to get to all of our classes.
This kept us in good shape as we walked with the masses,
And we got to check out the chicks that were hunting for mates.
I wasn’t ready to settle down yet so I didn’t take them on dates.

.

We went to our mechanical engineering classes during the day,
And did our homework at the Dorm room before we did play.
There was a TV room downstairs with very comfortable chairs.
When we finished watching our shows, we went back upstairs.

.

Our friends were Skinny Boob, Scrawny Donny, and Puss.
A nickname we gave the people we knew that would not fuss.
Saturday night we would get beer and go to the drive in movie.
We drove to the Strip to buy beer, as the town was dry as can be.

.

During football season we all had free passes to the games.
We had Anderson and Parks that were soon to be pro names.
Our team was good and went to the cotton bowl that year.
Attending the games was fun for us when we took along beer.

.

We learned how to read our professors with very much skill,
To predict what problems were on test papers they would fill.
We found all the tests that were given in all the past years,
So we made very good scores and eased all of our cares.

.

I got a school job grading papers for a Civil engineering class
Because I needed to make a little extra spending cash.
I had to work the problems myself for the grading guideline.
I soon found the smart guy and used his paper to save time.

.

During finals week we stayed up all night long studying hard,
And crammed so we could to get a good grade on our score card.
We worked hard and got our mechanical engineering degree,
So we would be prepared for the job with our selected Company.
