Taking the time to personally praise a job well done will surely reap good rewards. Here’s my story.

I worked on a project to expand the capacity of Phillips Petroleum Companies Kenai LNG ( liquefied natural gas) Plant  in Alaska. The plant, which transported the LNG to Japan via LNG specially designed ships, had been making loads of money for the Company for 40 years was always watched closely by management. My boss Ken and I had been pushing a project to expand the annual capacity of the plant by adding more cooling capability in the summer months. We first ran a summer time plant capacity test to establish base line capacity and prepared a report. We then worked with Bechtel to design the system and prepare a cost estimate for the installation. We presented a project which was approved and was installed. The result was a 30% capacity increase in one of our best Company Assets. Management was extremely happy with the project.

I actually had a Vice President walk down from his 17th floor office to my office on the 7th floor of the Phillips Building and walk in and say “Bill, you did an excellent job on the Kenai Capacity Expansion Project, Keep up the good work!” This was the only time in my whole career this ever happened to me although I had worked on many successful projects in the past.

 

 

Excellent Job Bill, Keep up the good work.

This one comment from that Vice President built my ego to a peak and my enthusiasm for my work increased tremendously. I worked harder and smarter after that than I ever worked before in my career. We had a flood of very successful projects. If company executives knew how much they could get out of a few personal visits to their employees to tell them they did a good job, they would certainly reap many benefits for the Company, but most of them just don’t have the time????????

This same philosophy will work well for parents in dealing with their children. Just take some extra time and tell them what a good job they did on their project and you will see an increase in production from them as well.

 

 

Ben, you did an excellent job building that batman Lego, you are truly a master builder.
