Still Digging

Still Digging

.

We dug down another layer in the trunk this afternoon,
And uncovered things that filled us with joy so soon,
This may be the best layer we have found to date,
If we hit the bottom tommorrow, it’s a time I will hate.

In an old plastic sack, a black collar necklace we did find.
With a note that said it was Lucy Low’s she wore so fine.
I recall my grandmother wore things like that to church,
When I was a young boy learning as my eyes did search.

There was a long babies nightshirt from long long ago,
And a young ladies nightshirt from the same era also.
Pam believes these belonged to her dear sweet mother,
In the 1920s or early 1930s raised with sisters and brothers.

Pam’s Mom, Ruby Evelyn Young in the1930s.

We uncovered a very old New Testament Bible in there,
With Malelia Kendrick written on the cover so bare
Inside was written “From Pa” that we believe was Pa Butcher,
Her grandpa on Aurora Bells side who was close to her.

Rolled up in one of my Moms old round girdle tubes,
Was a Mason chamois leather scroll so very cute,
With information from the time when Dad first joined,
The Mason’s at the Lodge in Borger in 1946 still going.

I was surprised to see my favorite coat when I was three,
Which is brown leather with real cow hair in front to see.
I loved that cowboy coat dearly in those days gone by,
It’s been 70 years since I wore that old coat proudly.

We uncovered a blue neckerchief that my Mom did adore.
It was a true cowboy neckerchief like I often wore.
My Mom often used them to dress my sister and I,
Which I liked so much because Cowboys never die.

Inside we also found a a very fancy crocheted purse,
Pam’s Mom crocheted it for Pam and it was her first.
There was also a dress Pam wore as a girl in there too,
Pam’s Mom was a very fine lady we loved so true.

My 6 transistor radio from the 1950s was inside too,
With a leather case that kept in nice the years through.
When we slept out in the yard on Stark Street way back,
We listened to tunes on KOMA and that is a true fact.

I was also surprised to see a lamp I made in woodshop,
When I was 16 years old for my second project so hot.
That lamp sat in Mom and Dads house until they died,
When I carried it home, Pam put it away and I cried.

What a beauty.

Again we didn’t get to the bottom of that old trunk,
So look for more about the old memories in our junk,
Who would have thought that much stuff would fit,
So I guess we’ll get down to the bottom before we quit.
