Sitting On The Porch
.
I always loved sitting out on the porch by myself for quiet time,
It was so good for my soul and kept my internal thinking in line.
This poem describes what that country porch time meant to me,
As a lot of wonderful things I experienced out there, you see.

Sitting On The Porch
.
I came out on the porch to relax after a fine supper Mom cooked,
Darkness was about to fall as out over the big lake I looked.
There was a blue mist over the lake that was just hanging there.
A breeze brought the sharp smell of pine needles to me in the air.

As I calmly sat there, I could hear the crickets soft song in the air
The blinking lightning bugs began rising up from the grass everywhere.
A beautiful display to see out in that cool summer evening sky.
Giving me a peaceful easy feeling as I watched them all fly by.

I could see a flock of ducks setting down out there on the lake,
Coming in from the grain fields where good food they did take.
The water rippled just a little and then smoothed right back out,
As they settled down for the night to rest, there is not any doubt.

I could hear a great horned owl asking “who who” looking for prey,
From a large pine tree somewhere over there where I used to play.
The bull frogs just began their deep riveting calls down on the bank,
And there was a whippoorwill calling Far away as the Lord I thank.

I saw a movement off to my right on the steps to the ground.
It was a chipmunk looking for some food that he has now found.
My Mom always put scraps out just for all the critters to eat,
As she was a nice caring lady that is always so very very sweet.

Up in the corner of the porch was a moth in spider web flapping,
The spider saw him and ran out and with his venom zapped him.
Each morning my Mom removes that webb and it is back by evening,
The spider is relentless and builds it back without ever grieving.

I could hear wild coyotes howling at that big old yellow moon.
I loved to hear that bluesy sound as they howled out their own tunes.
There’s nothing so comforting as sitting on the porch taking it all in,
You’ll know what I’m talking about if it someplace that you’ve been.

Sometimes I sat out on the porch by myself for hours in empathy.
Being entertained by all of God’s creatures and their grand symphony.
There’s just no better feeling than the natural high you get there.
Getting lost in yourself feeling just like you are floating up in the air.

As I sat there rocking very slowly in my wooden rocking chair,
I was feeling wonderful being there in the middle of nature so fair.
The sights, sounds, smells, and feelings that you get out here.,
Cannot be found in the cities with all the stuff going on there.

So if you’ve never been in the country sitting on a porch alone,
In the evening taking in all of old mother nature’s country zone,
You need to get out and see what you have always been missing,
By taking in smells, sights, feelings, and sounds for your christening.
